What is finish carpentry?

Finish carpentry involves the final touches and detailed woodwork that complete a building's interior or exterior appearance. This includes tasks such as installing trim, molding, baseboards, door and window casings, cabinetry, and other decorative elements. Finish carpenters focus on precision and aesthetics, ensuring that joints are tight, surfaces are smooth, and all work is visually appealing. Their craftsmanship is often the most visible part of a construction project, contributing significantly to the look and feel of a space.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a finish carpenter?

To thrive as a Finish Carpenter, you need expertise in woodworking, measuring, blueprint reading, and the use of hand and power tools, often gained through vocational training or apprenticeships. Familiarity with carpentry tools like miter saws, nail guns, and wood finishing products, as well as OSHA safety certifications, is typically expected. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication with clients and team members are critical soft skills. These competencies ensure high-quality craftsmanship, safe work practices, and customer satisfaction in finish carpentry projects.

What are some common challenges faced in a finish carpentry role, and how can they be addressed?

Finish carpentry often presents challenges such as working with uneven surfaces, meeting tight deadlines, and ensuring precise measurements for a flawless appearance. Carpenters can address these by using specialized tools like laser levels and coping saws, maintaining clear communication with project managers, and carefully reviewing blueprints before starting a task. Attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills are essential, as even small mistakes can impact the overall quality and aesthetics of the finished work.

What is the difference between Finish Carpentry vs Framing Carpentry?

Finish CarpentryFraming Carpentry
Focuses on detailed interior work like trim, molding, cabinetry, and installing doors and windowsInvolves constructing the structural framework of buildings, including walls, floors, and roof systems
Requires precision, attention to detail, and finishing skillsRequires knowledge of structural design, heavy lifting, and framing techniques
Typically works indoors or in finished spacesPrimarily works outdoors or in unfinished structures during construction
Certifications may include carpentry licenses and specialized finishing coursesCertifications often include OSHA safety training and framing-specific courses

Finish Carpentry and Framing Carpentry are both essential trades in construction, but they differ in scope and focus. Finish carpenters handle detailed interior work, while framing carpenters build the structural framework. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or service provider.

Is finish carpentry a good career?

Finish carpentry is a skilled trade involving installing interior trim, cabinetry, and moldings, often requiring knowledge of tools and precise measurements. It offers steady employment opportunities, especially for those with experience and certifications, and can lead to self-employment or specialization in high-end projects.

High-End Residential Remodeling & Custom Homes

This is not production work

If you’re a finish carpenter who takes pride in precision, problem-solving, and leading others by example, keep reading.

We’re a residential custom remodeling and finish carpentry company working on high-end, multi-million-dollar homes. Our projects require custom solutions, adaptability, and a high level of finish quality, not cookie-cutter trim packages.

This position is intentionally designed for an experienced finish carpenter who can raise the standard on-site and help lead less experienced carpenters by example.

Core Finish Carpentry (Primary Responsibilities)

  • Install tongue and groove (walls & ceilings)
  • Build and install custom wood beams
  • Hang interior and exterior doors
  • Install baseboard, door casing, crown molding
  • Applied and decorative molding
  • Custom trim details and problem-solving in the field

Supporting Work (As Needed)

  • Light painting & finishing
  • Other misc. remodeling-related tasks when required

You’ll work mostly alongside others, but must be fully capable of working independently when needed and setting the standard for quality.

What This Job Is (and Is Not)

This is NOT:

  • ❌ Production trim
  • ❌ Rough framing
  • ❌ Rushed work to hit unrealistic deadlines

This IS:

  • ✔ Custom finish carpentry on high-end homes
  • ✔ Real craftsmanship with real expectations
  • ✔ Problem-solving in real time with custom solutions
  • ✔ A role for someone who takes pride in their work and leadership

Experience & Expectations

  • Minimum 10 years of finish carpentry experience (this is negotiable DOE)
  • Must already be strong in all listed skills (this is a senior role)
  • Ability to lead by example and support less experienced carpenters
  • Strong communication and professionalism
  • Clean, organized job sites are non-negotiable
  • Must show up on time, prepared, and ready to work

Absolute Deal-Breakers

  • Sloppy work
  • Late arrivals
  • Poor communication
  • Lack of personal tools
  • Unprofessional behavior with clients or coworkers

Schedule & Employment Details

  • W-2 employee
  • Full-time, year-round
  • 40 hours per week
  • Overtime not expected

Pay & Benefits

  • Hourly pay: $30–$34/hour
    • Based on experience, craftsmanship, and leadership ability
  • Paid holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years
  • PTO:
    • 2 weeks PTO (starts accruing after 90 days)
    • PTO increases with tenure (3 weeks available after demonstrated long-term commitment)
  • Performance Bonuses (per project basis if available)

Culture & Work Environment

  • High-end, detail-driven projects
  • Clear plans and expectations
  • Professional clients and builder partners
  • Clean, organized job sites
  • Strong emphasis on representing the company well
  • We care about doing things the right way, not the fastest way

If you take pride in your work, your reputation, and the spaces you help create, you’ll fit in here.

How to Apply (Read Carefully)

Send us the following:

  1. Your resume (or summary of experience)
  2. 3 photos of finish or trim work you’re proud of
  3. A short written response to this question:
What separates good finish carpentry from great finish carpentry?

Applications that do not include all three items will not be considered.

Final Note

This role is for a carpenter who wants to be part of high-end, custom work, not someone looking to simply “run trim.” If that excites you, we want to hear from you!
