What is financial software?

Financial software refers to computer programs and applications designed to help individuals and businesses manage, analyze, and automate financial tasks. This can include accounting, budgeting, payroll, investment tracking, and tax preparation. Financial software is used by accountants, financial analysts, businesses, and individuals to increase efficiency, improve accuracy, and make informed financial decisions. Popular examples include QuickBooks, Xero, and SAP. The features and complexity of financial software can vary widely depending on the needs of the user.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working in financial software development, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in financial software development often encounter challenges related to maintaining high levels of security, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, and managing large volumes of sensitive data. Additionally, adapting to rapidly changing technologies and integrating with legacy financial systems can be complex. To address these challenges, teams frequently invest in ongoing training, collaborate closely with compliance experts, and adopt agile development methodologies to remain flexible and responsive to industry demands.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a financial software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Financial Software Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, Java, or C++), a solid grasp of finance principles, and typically a degree in computer science, finance, or a related field. Familiarity with financial modeling tools, databases like SQL, and experience with financial platforms or certifications like CFA or FRM are often expected. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication help developers translate complex financial requirements into robust software solutions. These competencies are crucial for creating reliable, secure, and compliant financial applications that meet industry and client needs.

What you'll do at Cascade:

Serve the American Dream Through Attainable Home Ownership.

We are seeking a Mid-Level Software Engineer with full-stack development experience to join our product development team. This role is ideal for an engineer who is comfortable building features across the frontend and backend, collaborates well with senior engineers and cross-functional partners, and is eager to use AI-assisted development practices to improve productivity, code quality, testing, and delivery.

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with Angular, TypeScript, .NET Core, and modern software engineering practices, and is interested in applying AI tools thoughtfully throughout the development lifecycle while maintaining strong engineering judgment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop responsive, accessible user interfaces using Angular and TypeScript, following established design patterns and frontend best practices.
  • Build and maintain application features across the full stack, with emphasis on backend development using .NET Core and frontend integration in Angular.
  • Implement backend functionality using established architectural patterns such as CQRS, MediatR, and Onion Architecture under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Create, consume, and maintain GraphQL APIs, including working with schemas, resolvers, and efficient client-side data access patterns.
  • Experience building or consuming GraphQL APIs, including client-side integration and resolver-level concepts (like VanillaCreme3.0 Libraries).
  • Use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate coding, debugging, test creation, documentation, refactoring, and technical research while validating generated outputs carefully.
  • Collaborate with Product, Design, QA, and senior engineering team members to deliver user-centered features with attention to quality, usability, and maintainability.
  • Write clean, testable, maintainable code aligned with SOLID principles and team coding standards.
  • Develop and maintain unit, integration, and end-to-end tests that support reliable delivery through CI/CD pipelines.
  • Participate actively in code reviews by incorporating feedback, identifying potential issues, and contributing constructive suggestions.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts by identifying opportunities to simplify code, improve test coverage, and streamline development workflows.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies and use Jira for task tracking, sprint planning, and delivery visibility.

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of professional experience in full-stack software engineering roles.
  • Proficiency with Angular and TypeScript for frontend development.
  • Strong experience with .NET Core and C# for backend application development.
  • Working knowledge of CQRS, MediatR, Onion Architecture, or similar clean architecture patterns.
  • Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or Microsoft SQL Server, including writing queries, working with schemas, and basic performance considerations.
  • Experience building or consuming GraphQL APIs, including client-side integration and resolver-level concepts.
  • Proficient with GitHub for source control, pull requests, and collaborative development workflows.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD concepts and tools such as Jenkins.
  • Strong advocate for clean, testable code and automated testing practices across the development lifecycle.
  • Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Codex, ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, or similar tools.
  • Ability to evaluate AI-generated code for correctness, maintainability, security, and alignment with team standards.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a collaborative engineering environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the mortgage industry, particularly loan originations, servicing, or related financial workflows.
  • Familiarity with regulatory, compliance, data privacy, or audit considerations in financial services.
  • Experience using AI tools to generate test cases, improve documentation, analyze legacy code, or support refactoring efforts.
  • Exposure to secure coding practices and responsible AI usage in enterprise software development.
  • Interest in improving developer workflows through automation, AI-assisted tooling, and better engineering practices.
