Job description

Salary:

https://calgaryjohnhoward.bamboohr.com/careers/276The Agency

The Calgary John Howard Society (CJHS) is a charity that reduces crime and makes Calgary communities safer by helping youth and adults make positive changes and move away from criminal behaviour. We do this by addressing the root causes of crime through housing, education, employment programs and support so that individuals have alternatives to breaking the law. CJHS is committed to restorative justice and an organizational environment that recognizes the dignity and worth of each person. CJHS values diversity and inclusion and welcomes qualified applicants from all walks of life.

CJHS is guided by a values-based, Carver governance model, and benefits from a highly engaged, thoughtful, and collaborative Board of Directors that works closely with the Executive Director to provide strong governance and strategic oversight.

Areas of Focus

CJHS is currently seeking new Board Directors with expertise and interest in one or more of the following areas:

1. Government Relations & Public Policy

2. Capital Development & Facilities

    • Construction and redevelopment projects
    • Property management or real estate development

3. Financial Oversight & Governance

    • Accounting, audit, or financial risk oversight
    • CPA designation strongly preferred

These skills will support the Boards role in overseeing organizational growth, infrastructure, and financial sustainability as CJHS continues to expand its programs, facilities, and community impact.

The Role

Board Directors at CJHS provide strategic governance, not operational management. Directors work collaboratively to:

  • Uphold and advance the organizations mission, vision, and values
  • Govern by policy and ensure alignment with the organizations Ends
  • Provide oversight related to financial health, risk, and compliance
  • Support longterm planning, capital development, and organizational sustainability
  • Act as ambassadors for CJHS within the community

Board service may also include participation in ad-hoc board committees aligned with skills and interests, such as Finance, Governance, or special project committees.

Time Commitment

  • Approximately 8 board meetings per year (evenings)
  • Committee participation as needed
  • Preparation and review of board materials in advance of meetings
  • Directors are appointed for an initial three-year term, with eligibility for additional terms in accordance with CJHS bylaws.

Qualifications & Experience

We welcome applications from individuals who bring:

  • Senior level professional experience in government, finance, construction, real estate, or related fields
  • Strong understanding of financial oversight, risk management, or capital planning
  • Experience working with or alongside boards, committees, or advisory bodies
  • Ability to think strategically and contribute at a governance level
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and values-driven leadership

CPA designation or equivalent financial credentials are considered a strong asset for candidates interested in financial oversight roles.

Lived experience, community leadership, and nontraditional career paths are valued. We encourage candidates to apply even if they do not meet every qualification listed. Your past does not define your future. A criminal record will not disqualify you from volunteering with us; we evaluate each application individually.
