What is financial research?

Financial research involves gathering, analyzing, and interpreting financial data to support decision-making in areas such as investments, corporate finance, or market trends. Professionals in financial research may assess company performance, industry outlooks, or economic indicators to help organizations or clients make informed financial choices. This role often requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and proficiency with financial modeling and data analysis tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in financial research?

To thrive in Financial Research, you need strong analytical skills, quantitative expertise, and a solid background in finance or economics, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with data analysis tools like Excel, Bloomberg Terminal, and financial modeling software, as well as certifications such as the CFA, is highly valued. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication set outstanding professionals apart in this field. These skills enable accurate analysis, informed recommendations, and clear presentation of complex financial information, which are crucial for effective decision-making.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in financial research, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Financial Research often face challenges such as tight deadlines, rapidly changing market conditions, and the need to synthesize large volumes of complex data. Staying updated with the latest financial news and industry trends is essential to provide accurate analyses. Effective time management, strong analytical skills, and collaboration with team members—such as analysts, portfolio managers, and economists—can help address these demands and ensure high-quality research output.

Financial researchers typically earn a median annual salary of around $70,000 to $90,000, depending on experience, education, and location. Research & Information Services Manager

Location: Downtown Houston, TX
Schedule: Full-Time | In Office
Compensation: Competitive Salary + Exceptional Benefits

Opportunity

A highly respected and established financial services organization is seeking an experienced Research & Information Services Manager to lead its research and information services function.

This is a highly visible leadership opportunity for an organized, polished, and intellectually curious professional with experience supporting investment professionals and managing sophisticated research, market data, and information resources.

The Research & Information Services Manager will oversee a small team and serve as a key resource for investment professionals, senior leadership, vendors, and internal business partners. This individual will be responsible for ensuring that critical research, market data, subscriptions, and information resources are well-managed, appropriately controlled, and readily available to support the investment process.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys operating in a professional, detail-oriented environment and is comfortable working with highly educated investment professionals and senior leadership.

The role is open due to a long-term employee retirement, creating an excellent opportunity to step into a well-established and highly respected organization.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

In addition to working in a professional and sophisticated financial services environment, this organization is known for offering an exceptional benefits package, including retirement benefits that are among the strongest available.

The organization also values work-life balance. Employees typically work approximately 37.5 hours per week, providing an excellent opportunity to build a long-term career without the demanding hours often associated with financial services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of two Research & Information Services professionals.
  • Establish clear responsibilities, priorities, workflows, and performance expectations for the department.
  • Manage daily operations, recurring responsibilities, and special projects while ensuring appropriate workload distribution and coverage.
  • Develop procedures, documentation, succession planning, and knowledge-transfer processes to reduce key-person dependencies.
  • Serve as the central resource for research subscriptions, financial information services, market data, and related licenses.
  • Manage market data feeds, research platforms, vendor relationships, subscriptions, renewals, service changes, cancellations, and licensing requirements.
  • Evaluate research and information services to identify opportunities for improved efficiency, consolidation, and cost management while maintaining the resources required by investment professionals.
  • Coordinate onboarding and access to research platforms and information resources for new investment professionals.
  • Partner with external research providers, brokers, market data vendors, and other service providers.
  • Coordinate training and support for investment professionals and other internal users of research and information platforms.
  • Receive, organize, retain, and distribute external investment and broker research to appropriate internal professionals.
  • Ensure research communications and external investment information are appropriately organized, distributed, and retained.
  • Manage and track designated internal investment research materials and related documentation.
  • Prepare periodic reporting regarding research activity, resources, vendors, and related services.
  • Oversee the preparation, organization, formatting, and tracking of internal earnings research and company research materials.
  • Partner closely with Investment Management, Information Technology, Finance, Operations, Compliance, and other internal stakeholders.
  • Provide a high level of service to investment professionals and senior management while maintaining strong organization, discretion, and attention to detail.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will bring a combination of financial services experience, research and information management expertise, strong leadership ability, and exceptional organizational skills.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience in investment management, financial research, information services, market data, vendor management, or a closely related financial services environment.
  • Experience supporting investment professionals, research teams, portfolio managers, analysts, traders, or other sophisticated financial services professionals.
  • Previous leadership or management experience, including the ability to prioritize work and manage a small team.
  • Strong experience managing research platforms, subscriptions, financial information services, market data, and/or vendor relationships.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to communicate professionally with senior management and highly sophisticated internal clients.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Experience working with SharePoint or similar information management platforms in a controlled environment.
  • Understanding of information organization, research taxonomy, or ontology within a financial research environment.
  • Experience with financial research and market data platforms such as AlphaSense, FactSet, and/or Bloomberg.
  • High level of professionalism, discretion, and accountability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Information Science, Library Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with Power BI or other reporting and analytics tools.
  • Knowledge of cloud-based information and technology environments.
  • Previous experience within an investment management, wealth management, asset management, private equity, family office, or similar financial services organization.

What Success Looks Like

The successful Research & Information Services Manager will:

  • Lead a highly organized and effective Research & Information Services team.
  • Ensure investment professionals have efficient access to the research and information resources they need.
  • Improve workflows and information management processes where appropriate.
  • Help modernize and optimize research tools and platforms.
  • Develop strong relationships with internal stakeholders and external vendors.
  • Identify opportunities to consolidate and improve research services while supporting the needs of the investment organization.
  • Create a well-structured, dependable function that allows investment professionals to focus more of their time on value-added research and investment activities.

Additional Requirements

  • This is a full-time, in-office position located in Downtown Houston.
  • Candidates must currently reside in the Greater Houston area.
  • The organization is unable to provide sponsorship now or in the future.

This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced research and information management professional seeking a long-term position with a sophisticated financial services organization, exceptional benefits, strong retirement contributions, and an excellent work-life balance.
