What does a financial planner intern do?

A Financial Planner Intern supports experienced financial planners by assisting with research, preparing client reports, and helping to develop financial plans. They may also participate in client meetings, gather and analyze financial data, and learn about investment strategies, budgeting, and retirement planning. This role is designed to provide hands-on experience in the financial planning industry, allowing interns to gain practical knowledge and develop essential skills for a future career as a financial advisor.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a financial planner intern?

To thrive as a Financial Planner Intern, you need a basic understanding of financial principles, analytical skills, and progress toward a relevant degree such as finance, economics, or accounting. Familiarity with financial planning software (like eMoney or MoneyGuidePro), Microsoft Excel, and, in some cases, pursuit of certifications such as the CFP is often expected. Strong interpersonal communication, attention to detail, and a client-focused attitude set outstanding interns apart. These skills and qualities are vital for supporting advisors, accurately analyzing client portfolios, and building trust with clients.

What are some typical projects or tasks a financial planner intern can expect to work on during their internship?

As a Financial Planner Intern, you can expect to assist with creating and updating financial plans, conducting research on investment options, and preparing client meeting materials. Interns often support senior advisors by gathering and analyzing client data, helping with portfolio reviews, and tracking market trends. You may also have opportunities to sit in on client meetings, collaborate with team members on case studies, and participate in internal training sessions to deepen your industry knowledge.
