What is a financial engineer?

A financial engineer, also called a computational engineer, advises clients on investment strategies and risk management based on quantitative analysis of their portfolio and the atmosphere in the stock market. As a financial engineer, your job duties include analyzing the stock market to predict how stocks will perform, building models of trends in the stock market based on market history, and make recommendations on how to manage their portfolio.

What is a financial engineer?

A Financial Engineer is a professional who applies mathematical techniques, computational tools, and financial theory to solve complex problems in finance. They are often involved in designing financial products, developing risk management strategies, and building quantitative models for pricing, trading, and portfolio management. Financial Engineers typically work for banks, investment firms, or financial technology companies, and their expertise is essential for managing financial risks and innovating new financial instruments.

What skills should a financial engineer have?

To thrive as a Financial Engineer, you need a strong background in mathematics, statistics, finance, and programming, typically supported by a degree in quantitative fields such as finance, mathematics, engineering, or computer science. Familiarity with technical tools like Python, R, MATLAB, financial modeling software, and sometimes certifications like CFA or FRM is highly valued. Exceptional problem-solving, analytical thinking, and the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly are vital soft skills. These skills and qualifications are crucial for designing innovative financial models, managing risks, and enabling data-driven decision-making in complex financial environments.

What are some common challenges financial engineers face when developing quantitative models, and how can they address them?

Financial Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring model accuracy, dealing with incomplete or noisy data, and adapting models to rapidly changing market conditions. Addressing these issues typically requires strong collaboration with data scientists, risk managers, and traders to validate assumptions and stress-test models under various scenarios. Staying current with industry trends and regulatory requirements also helps Financial Engineers maintain robust, compliant solutions that add value to their organizations.

What is the difference between Financial Engineer vs Quantitative Analyst?

Both roles require strong quantitative skills and contribute to financial innovation and risk management.

Do financial engineers make a lot of money?

Financial engineers often earn high salaries due to their specialized skills in quantitative analysis, modeling, and programming. Compensation varies based on experience, location, and industry, but many financial engineers have the potential to earn six-figure incomes or more, especially with advanced degrees and certifications like the CFA or FRM.

How much do financial engineers make?

Financial engineers in general earn a median annual salary of around $100,000 to $130,000, with experienced professionals and those working in major financial centers earning higher. Salaries can vary based on experience, education, certifications like CFA or FRM, and the complexity of financial models used. Job description

Opiniion is a resident experience tool that partners with property management to create better living experiences for their residents. Opiniion is committed to exceptional service and innovation, earning recognition as one of America's fastest-growing private companies. Driven by a forward-thinking team, we're shaping the future of resident engagement. Our continued growth and commitment to innovation make this an exciting time to be part of our team!
LOCATION: Lehi, UT
POSITION OVERVIEW:
As our Analytics Engineer - Finance / GTM, you'll build and own the datasets and reporting that the company runs on. You'll turn data from various sources (NetSuite, HubSpot, etc.) into clean, trusted, well-documented datasets, then surface them as reporting leaders can act on: pipeline performance, revenue forecasting, retention, and more. You'll be our finance & GTM data domain expert, pairing strong SQL and dimensional modeling with financial fluency, building reliable data layers that power AI-driven insights across the business. You'll structure trustworthy data, and the AI on top of it, moving data intelligence forward faster.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Build and maintain gold standard finance owned datasets in Databricks aligned with Data Architecture standards.
  • Build Finance and GTM reporting in Omni including pipeline performance, NRR, GRR, revenue forecasting, deal velocity, close rates, and budget versus actuals.
  • Standardize financial metrics across Finance, Sales, and CX.
  • Improve forecasting accuracy and unit economics including ARR, retention, CAC, and LTV.
  • Own data quality, documentation, and AI ready finance reporting layers.
  • Maintain finance reporting inventories, metric definitions, and reconciliations.
  • Automate recurring finance workflows including board and investor reporting.
  • Partner with Finance, Data Architecture, Sales, CX, and executive stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 5+ years as an Analytics Engineer, Data Analyst, or similar role supporting finance data in a B2B SaaS environment.
  • Strong SQL and dimensional modeling skills.
  • Experience with financial reporting, forecasting, SaaS metrics, and GTM analytics.
  • Hands on experience with BI tools, ideally Omni, and Databricks.
  • Experience building AI driven financial data solutions.
  • Ability to translate finance requirements into documented data products.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Self starter with an ownership mindset in a fast moving environment.
  • Ability to build trusted datasets, reconcile data across systems, and improve data quality.

OPINIION'S CULTURE:
At Opiniion, we take our work seriously, but we don't take ourselves too seriously! We work hard together, and we have a lot of fun doing it. We are a team that believes in real autonomy: you own your area, solve problems, and move fast enough to actually see the change you make. The people here are invested in each other just as much as they're invested in the work, and that combination is what makes this place different. We believe in collaboration, innovation, and building a team that truly cares-about our clients, their residents, and each other.
BENEFITS SNAPSHOT:
  • Comprehensive healthcare plans, encompassing medical, dental, and vision insurance, along with group life coverage. Opiniion covers 40-90% of the premium cost for employees and all dependents.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with a 100% corporate match on the first 1% and 50% match on the next 5%.
  • Pre-tax Health Savings Accounts (HSA).
  • Paid Parental Leave for all new parents (including adoption or foster care).
  • Unlimited Time Off policies.
  • 10 Paid Holidays annually.
  • Monthly Wellness Reimbursement benefit.

*Note that the above benefits are available only to full-time employees of Opiniion*
Opiniion is an equal opportunity employer that is committed to diversity and inclusion in the workplace. We prohibit discrimination and harassment of any kind based on actual or perceived race, color, creed, religion, national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, age, sex or gender (including pregnancy, childbirth and pregnancy-related conditions), gender identity or expression (including transgender status), sexual orientation, marital status, military service and veteran status, physical or mental disability, genetic information, or any other characteristic protected by applicable federal, state or local laws and ordinances.
