Job description

The San Francisco Standard is seeking a Deputy Business Editor to shape our coverage of real estate, finance, and local business at a moment of extraordinary change in San Francisco. This is a player-coach role: you will oversee a team of reporters while also working your own scoops, features, and investigations.

You will extend The Standard's coverage into finance, private equity, venture capital, and the people who steer wealth and power in the Bay Area. A central storyline of this beat is the transformation of San Francisco itself - who is benefiting from the city's new waves of wealth creation, who is being left behind, and what new industries, cultures, and economies are emerging as a result.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and edit a small team covering real estate, finance, and local business, while reporting and writing your own scoops and features
  • Extend coverage into finance, private equity, venture capital, and the people and institutions shaping wealth and power in San Francisco
  • Shape coverage of San Francisco's economic transformation - who benefits, who gets left behind, and what industries and cultures emerge as a result
  • Cultivate strong sources among executives, investors, and developers, and work with editors, photographers, and the video team to bring stories to life
  • Represent the publication at relevant events, conferences, or speaking engagements

Qualifications

  • Significant experience in business, financial, or real estate journalism, including editing or managing reporters
  • Proven ability to report and write scoops and features while also managing a team
  • Strong network of contacts in finance, real estate, private equity, venture capital, or related industries, or a proven ability to build one quickly
  • A point of view on San Francisco's economic transformation and the ability to translate it into compelling coverage
  • Experience conceiving and launching new editorial products, such as newsletters, and an eye for how they might grow into standalone franchises with branding and events
  • Excellent writing and editing abilities
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, and to manage competing deadlines across a small staff
  • Proficiency in generating original story ideas and pitching them successfully
  • Familiarity with campaign finance, public records, and financial document analysis a plus
  • Data visualization and data analysis skills a plus
  • Chinese and Spanish language skills a plus

We are an in-office company and the role requires a physical presence in the Bay Area. This job may require occasional night and/or weekend work. We offer competitive salaries and excellent benefits.

The pay range for this role is $120,000 to $140,000. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate. We encourage you to apply even if you don't fit the preferred qualifications of the job.
