Job description

About Roadrunner Venture Studios

Roadrunner Venture Studios is the nation's leading platform for founding breakthrough ventures in deep technology. Our mission is to turn frontier tech into breakthrough companies for the benefit of the American people. Together with engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs, we build products, create business models, recruit teams, align companies with their first customers, and provide initial funding. Our Venture Studio focuses on advanced energy, advanced materials,  advanced manufacturing, and next generation compute.

At Roadrunner, the future doesn't just happen - we make it happen. We take our work seriously, without taking ourselves too seriously. We believe progress must be imagined and built - and we build it together.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly analytical, finance-driven Analyst to join our New Mexico studio and support the creation of new deep-tech ventures. This exciting role sits at the intersection of financial modeling, technology evaluation, and venture creation.

This is a model-first role. You will translate technical concepts and emerging markets into clear economic frameworks, unit economics, and investment-grade financial models that inform whether and how we build companies.

The ideal candidate is a financial modeling powerhouse in the making-someone who can take incomplete data, ambiguous inputs, and early-stage technologies and build structured models that drive real decisions. You should be able to move quickly from first principles to defensible assumptions, creating clarity where none exists.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Modeling & Investment Analysis
  • Build and maintain bottom-up financial models for new venture concepts, including revenue models, cost structures, and capital requirements

  • Develop unit economics, pricing strategies, and margin profiles across a range of deep-tech business models

  • Conduct scenario analyses and sensitivity modeling to evaluate risk, upside, and capital efficiency

  • Translate technical milestones into financial implications (cost to scale, time to commercialization, capital intensity)

  • Support investment decisions through clear, data-driven financial outputs and structured analysis

Market & Commercial Analysis
  • Support synthesis of market dynamics into quantifiable inputs for financial models

  • Identify commercialization pathways and map them to revenue timing and scaling assumptions

  • Engage potential customers to validate willingness to pay and demand drivers, feeding into model assumptions

  • Analyze competitive landscapes through an economic lens (cost position, pricing power, defensibility)

Venture Creation Support
  • Partner with Founders-in-Residence and studio leadership to translate ideas into financially viable businesses

  • Contribute to business cases and investment memos grounded in rigorous financial logic

  • Support development of go-to-market strategies informed by unit economics and capital efficiency

  • Assist in building pitch decks and fundraising materials, with a focus on financial clarity

Studio Operations & Model Development
  • Help build and refine repeatable financial modeling frameworks for venture creation

  • Support development of assumptions libraries, benchmarks, and modeling best practices

  • Coordinate with product, engineering, and finance teams to ensure alignment between technical development and financial outcomes

  • Provide structured economic analysis to support internal decision-making

Preferred Qualifications
  • 1-3 years of experience in investment banking, private equity, venture capital, or management consulting

  • Strong foundation in financial modeling (Excel or equivalent) and comfort building models from scratch

  • Ability to translate complex or technical inputs into clear economic frameworks

  • Experience working with imperfect or early-stage data, forming assumptions from first principles

  • Technical background (engineering, physics, math, computer science, or similar) preferred

  • Strong communication skills-able to clearly explain financial concepts

  • High intellectual curiosity and comfort in fast-moving, ambiguous environments

  • Must be based in or willing to relocate to Albuquerque, New Mexico
