What is a financial content writer?

Financial content writers are professionals who create written material focused on finance-related topics such as investing, personal finance, banking, markets, and economic trends. Their work can include articles, reports, blog posts, newsletters, and educational guides for a variety of audiences, from industry experts to everyday consumers. They often research complex financial concepts and translate them into easily understandable language, helping readers make informed decisions about their finances. Financial content writers may work for financial institutions, media outlets, or as freelancers.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a financial content writer?

To thrive as a Financial Content Writer, you need strong writing and research skills, a solid understanding of financial concepts, and often a background in finance, economics, or journalism. Familiarity with financial data platforms like Bloomberg, FactSet, or Yahoo Finance, as well as SEO tools and content management systems, is typically expected. Attention to detail, the ability to explain complex topics clearly, and adaptability to different audiences are standout soft skills. These abilities ensure the creation of accurate, engaging, and trustworthy content that informs and educates readers in the financial sector.

How does a financial content professional typically collaborate with subject matter experts and compliance teams?

Financial Content professionals often work closely with subject matter experts, such as analysts or portfolio managers, to ensure accuracy and depth in their writing. Collaboration with compliance teams is also essential to ensure that all published content adheres to regulatory guidelines and company policies. This means frequent meetings, review cycles, and clear communication to balance engaging content with legal and ethical standards. Building strong relationships with these stakeholders helps streamline the content creation process and maintain credibility in the financial industry.

  • Deal Strategy & Negotiation: Lead negotiations and structure high-value content licensing agreements for Angel’s owned and operated platform, including domestic and international rights, exclusivity, library acquisitions, revenue-share, windowing, and other creative commercial models that balance financial performance with Guild and platform objectives. .
  • Financial Analysis & Investment Recommendations: Build and analyze financial models to forecast member impact, revenue generation, lifetime value, ROI, NPV, contribution margin, and overall investment performance. Present acquisition recommendations and business cases to leadership.
  • Portfolio Performance & Optimization: Monitor licensed content performance across viewing behavior, member engagement, retention, financial performance, and overall member value. Partner with internal teams to maximize discoverability and long-term value, recommending renewals, rights extensions, windowing strategies, and other portfolio optimization opportunities.
  • Portfolio Strategy: Balance content investments across genres, audience segments, licensing budgets, and strategic priorities to maximize the overall value and performance of the content portfolio.
  • Rights Management: Oversee licensed content rights, availability windows, contractual obligations, exclusivity provisions, and distribution restrictions to ensure content is utilized effectively and licensing terms are upheld.
  • Industry Intelligence & Representation: Support the Angel acquisitions team at industry markets, screenings, festivals, and other relevant events while monitoring competitive licensing activity, evolving distribution and windowing models, consumer behavior, audience trends, and emerging opportunities to inform acquisition strategy and identify potential partnerships.
  • Deal Execution: Partner closely with Legal and relevant internal stakeholders to move agreements efficiently from initial opportunity through negotiation, contracting, execution, and launch.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.

Competencies

  • Demonstrated success negotiating and executing high-value content licensing agreements.
  • Deep understanding of the entertainment ecosystem, including major studios, distributors, agencies, production companies, and international content suppliers.
  • Strong understanding of SVOD, AVOD, FAST, transactional, linear, and other evolving content distribution models.
  • Advanced financial modeling and investment analysis skills, including ROI, NPV, contribution margin, revenue forecasting, and lifetime value analysis.
  • Strong understanding of content rights, licensing structures, exclusivity, availability windows, and distribution restrictions.
  • Ability to use audience analytics, viewing data, market intelligence, and competitive insights to inform acquisition and investment decisions.
