What is a financial advisor trainee?

A financial advisor trainee is an entry-level employee in a financial services company. The position is similar to an apprenticeship; the trainee works under the supervision of a financial advisor to learn how to determine the client’s needs and objectives for their investments. As a financial advisor trainee, you also cultivate your own client relationships and eventually transition to become a full-time financial advisor. Though you can perform your duties without direct supervision, most companies require you to follow strict guidelines and report to a supervisor during your training period. Financial advisor trainees typically earn a base salary, commission on sales, and performance bonuses.

What is a financial advisor trainee?

A Financial Advisor Trainee is an entry-level professional who is training to become a licensed financial advisor. They typically work under the supervision of experienced advisors to learn about financial planning, investment strategies, and client relationship management. Trainees often assist with research, prepare reports, and help develop financial plans while studying for required licensing exams. This role serves as a stepping stone to becoming a full-fledged financial advisor, equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills needed for the profession.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a financial advisor trainee?

To thrive as a Financial Advisor Trainee, you need a solid understanding of finance principles, analytical skills, and at least a bachelor's degree in finance, business, or a related field. Familiarity with financial planning software, CRM platforms, and progress toward industry certifications like the Series 7 or Series 66 is typical. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and the ability to build trust help trainees excel in client-facing situations. These skills are crucial for providing sound financial advice, building client relationships, and achieving long-term success in a competitive industry.

What are the typical challenges faced by a financial advisor trainee during the first year on the job?

As a Financial Advisor Trainee, one of the primary challenges in the first year is building a client base from the ground up, which often involves extensive networking and outreach. Additionally, trainees must quickly learn to balance studying for licensing exams with hands-on client interactions and administrative tasks. Many also find it challenging to adapt to a commission-based or performance-driven compensation structure, which requires strong self-motivation. Support from mentors and ongoing training programs can help new advisors develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed.

Job description

Overview
With deep roots in Wisconsin and commitment to community values, Johnson Financial Group is known for helping clients navigate both banking and wealth needs with a relationship-driven, local approach. This opportunity offers the chance to join a respected institution where advisors are supported by a collaborative team across lines of business and key support areas, creating strong referral opportunities and a more connected client experience.
This is a rare opportunity for a Financial Advisor to step into a lead advisor role within a bank environment and inherit an established, well-developed book of business. For the right person, this is more than a traditional advisor opening, it's a chance to build on an existing foundation of client relationships while partnering closely with professionals across banking, wealth, and internal support teams. The team-based approach creates meaningful referral flow, strong collaboration across lines of business, and the infrastructure needed to help advisors grow and serve clients at a high level. If you're looking for an opportunity with built-in momentum and real long-term upside, we'd love to talk with you.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement a personal business plan to drive new client acquisition, referrals, portfolio penetration, and retention, resulting in consistent portfolio growth.
  • Achieve significant growth in assets under management and revenue for a profitable book of business.
  • Proactively review client portfolios to ensure proper segmentation and transition to appropriate resources.
  • Deliver a distinctive client experience by leveraging our value proposition and referring clients to wealth, mortgage, insurance, private banking, and commercial banking services.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of all business offerings, financial industry topics, and financial planning concepts to address client objectives through a purposeful discovery process.
  • Collaborate with JFG Business Partners to match prospect needs with suitable solutions, resulting in new business and deeper relationships.
  • Lead a team of associates, setting and exceeding performance goals while fostering teamwork and mutual respect.

Required Experience
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in finance, accounting, economics, business management, or a related field preferred with a minimum of 2 years' client-facing financial industry experience in business development; relevant work experience may substitute for education.
  • Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, strategic, and tactical implementation skills in financial settings.
  • Developed networking abilities and a strong grasp of group dynamics, including experience with Centers of Influence.
  • Solid understanding of finance and economics, plus focus on industry trends and proactive adoption of products and technology to serve clients effectively.
  • Series 7, 63 or 66 required (or obtained within 6 months); must also secure all state-required insurance licenses.

Come as you are.
Our culture embraces diversity, equity, & inclusion; one where everyone feels valued and heard. For more information on JFG's culture and diversity efforts, including our employee resource groups, please visit the Diversity section of our career website.
