Description
Position Summary:
The QC Inspector will be responsible for verifying that fabricated items meet the specifications outlined in project-specific quality control plans and relevant codes. This role involves performing both dimensional and visual inspections to ensure compliance with these requirements. This position can also include requirements to perform NDT and Coating Inspections. The Inspector must have a strong understanding of industry codes and standards, as well as the manufacturing systems used by SME Industries. A solid knowledge of inspection techniques and welding processes is also essential for this position. The QC Inspector needs to be willing to learn and go through continuous training.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Perform assigned duties in accordance with project specifications, applicable codes and standards, and the SME Industries Quality Management System.
• Review company manuals, procedures, and inspection plans for each project to ensure compliance.
• Review and interpret shop drawings; assist production personnel with clarification when needed.
• Verify that fabricated items meet dimensional tolerances and drawing specifications.
• Perform 100% visual inspection of welds and assemblies, ensuring they meet required accept/reject criteria.
• Conduct welder qualification tests and ensure welding personnel meet required certifications.
• Monitor welding processes to ensure compliance with Welding Procedure Specification variables and the proper use of welding consumables, utilizing the applicable tools and instruments to do so.
• Perform nondestructive testing (NDT) of welds and materials when qualified or coatings inspections when trained and qualified.
• Complete detailed and accurate reports in company software, including inspection records, nonconformance reports, and corrective action follow-ups.
• Perform inspections at subcontractor facilities as required.
• Maintain inspection and test equipment in proper working order and verify calibration status.
• Stay current with applicable codes, standards, and industry regulations.
• Comply with the AWS Code of Ethics for Inspectors.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
• Work overtime, weekends, or alternate shifts as needed or assigned.
• Demonstrate strong attention to detail during inspections, drawing reviews, and final product verification.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the QC Manager or higher.
Qualifications:
Basic Inspector (C-Level)
o High School Diploma or equivalent.
o 1+ years of structural steel fitter experience or related experience justified by the QC Manager.
o Previous inspection or fitter experience preferred.
o Ability to do simple math as deemed necessary by work type.
o Must be dependable, reliable, and mature enough to handle equipment in a safe sensible manner and complete work assignments in a timely, professional manner.
o Willingness to learn.
o Must be able to read tape measures, equipment readings, and write inspection reports in English.
o Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
o Must be authorized to work in the United States.
o Must be able to operate computers and typical office software (Microsoft 365, PDF readers, and complete training for company-specific software).
o Strict Adherence to all SME Industries, HR, Safety, and other requirements.
o Be able to communicate well in person and through electronic means.
o Complete SME VT Level I training.
Intermediate Inspector (B-Level)
o All Basic Inspector Qualifications +
o 3+ Years of relevant industry experience as approved by the QC Manager or higher.
o SME Industries VT II, or UT or MT Level II Certifications
o AWS-CWI Preferred
o Bolting or Coatings Inspection Qualifications
o LADBS/CCDBS QC Technician Qualifications
Advanced Inspector (A-level)
o All Basic and Intermediate Qualifications +
o Level II NDT qualifications (VT+UT+MT)
o AWS CWI Preferred
o Bolt Inspection Qualification
o Coatings Inspection Qualification
Work Environment:
• Mostly in a shop environment, but with regular trips to between shops as necessary. This individual will be exposed to a loud, non-climate controlled environment where temperatures may change depending on the season. Must be physically fit enough the stand, bend, or kneel for long periods of time and lift up to 50-lbs.
