Job description

Our Custodial Department has an entry-level opportunity for a Quality Assurance Inspector. This position plays a critical role in supporting our custodial teams by providing consistent, measurable, and objective data used to ensure high-quality service across Grounds.
The Quality Assurance Inspector assesses the cleanliness and condition of UVA buildings-academic, housing, and other space types-using defined cleaning standards and APPA level criteria. This role requires strong attention to detail, objectivity, critical thinking, and comfort using technology. After initial training, the QA Inspector works largely independently , walking and scoring spaces daily to identify cleanliness deficiencies and document findings.
Although this is an independent role, you will have the flexibility to collaborate with colleagues, consult with supervisors, participate in team calibration sessions, and contribute your ideas for improving processes. Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic, housing, and patient-care programs. With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, FM is responsible for the daily operation, repair, and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure, and grounds across University -owned and leased properties.
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. U p to o ne day per month, the schedule ma y include one weekend day .
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct thorough and objective inspections of assigned space types based on appearance conditions and APPA level standards.

  • Utilize electronic tools (iPad, iPhone, SharePoint, Microsoft Suite, inspection software, etc.) to perform and record daily inspections.

  • Document inspection results accurately, including detailed notations.

  • Capture clear, context-rich photos to support scoring decisions.

  • Work with supervisors, managers, frontline staff, and other inspectors to ensure scoring consistency and team-wide calibration.

  • Support custodial teams by sharing findings that help improve service outcomes.

  • Perform time-sensitive additional inspections as assigned by the QA Manager to meet customer needs.

  • Foster positive working relationships with team members and customers while remaining objective in inspection duties.

  • Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders and building occupants when needed.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Education : High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Experience : One year of relevant or equivalent experience.

  • Licensure : Valid driver's license with a zero or positive points balance, to be maintained throughout employment.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to make logical, objective, and consistent judgment calls.

  • Knowledge of APPA levels and custodial operations; ability to demonstrate keen observation and sound judgment under time constraints.

  • Willingness to learn and apply established quality assurance standards and scoring methods.

  • Reliable, trustworthy, and committed to good attendance.

  • Comfortable using technology, including mobile devices and software platforms.

  • Ability to walk, stoop, and bend for extended periods while inspecting buildings.

Position Compensation: $18.50-$21.50 hourly, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Weekend shift differential $ 2.00 hourly.
This is a full-time, non-exempt-level position with UVA benefits .
Selected candidates will be required to complete all required background
checks prior to the first day of employment.
Physical demands: This position works in the field 90% of the time assessing the quality of spaces cleaned. It requires walking, standing, climbing stairs, stooping, observing , using both hands to hold iPad and enter data or take photos, etc.
Position Location : The position is based in Charlottesville, VA and must be performed fully on-site.
