Job Description Summary:

The Vertex Mobile, Alabama Refinery is hiring a laboratory technician. This position will perform and document laboratory tests on petroleum products and refining process streams to ensure process control, product specifications, and compliance parameters. In addition, the role will be expected to perform routine maintenance on testing equipment and troubleshoot instruments issues.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Analyze samples submitted to the lab per documented methods and procedures
  • Prepare standards/references for the lab, process analyzers and complete all required paperwork
  • Analyze and plot SQC samples per procedure and schedule
  • Perform required preventative maintenance on instruments per schedule, including, but not limited to, changing septum’s and inserts, replacing primary/secondary film/windows, and cleaning and/or changing electrodes
  • Troubleshoot, communicate, and document issues with instruments/methods
  • Ensure data and instrument integrity, report any atypical sample condition, analytical results, and equipment irregularities
  • Retain and dispose of samples according to procedures
  • Support lab projects
  • Participate in efforts to continuously improve laboratory performance in safety, quality, reliability, and costs
  • Ability to remain standing for periods of over an hour
  • Ability to work with others and effectively communicate verbally and in writing
  • Actively participate in a team environment
  • Ability to take immediate corrective action in the event a potential unsafe act or behavior is observed
  • Use computers and other devices to carryout work activities
  • Work 12-hour shift work including day and night shifts, holidays and weekends
  • Respond to unscheduled callouts
  • Complete required health, safety, security, and environmental compliance training
  • Actively comply with all plant policies and procedures
  • Use proper personal protective equipment
  • Adhere to site alcohol and drug standards including random drug screenings

  • Willing to support activities outside of the laboratory environment if needed. (Climb ladders, climb stairs, work in a loud industrial environment, enter confined spaces, lift 50 lbs., work at heights, and work outside in inclement weather)

Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications:

  • Lab experience in refinery petrochemical testing methods, including Gas Chromatography, pH, titrations, and spectrophotometric techniques required
  • Knowledge of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
  • Knowledge of chromatography data systems
  • Knowledge of Microsoft office software (excel, word, etc.)
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States permanently on a full-time basis without requiring sponsorship
  • Must possess and maintain a current, valid license to operate a motor vehicle in the United States
  • Must be able to read, speak, and write English fluently
  • Hold or be able to qualify to receive a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card - Information may be found at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic
  • Have or be able to obtain a Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response certification
  • As part of the pre-employment selection process, candidates are required to submit to and receive satisfactory results from all pre-employment background check, drug screening (including a hair sample), medical evaluation, and reference checks.


FLSA Status: Nonexempt

Work Schedule: 12-hour shifts, nights and days (may be required to work other schedules)

The United Steelworkers Union (USW) represents the hourly workforce.
