What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FIFO operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a FIFO (First-In, First-Out) Operator, you need a solid understanding of inventory management, warehouse operations, and basic math skills, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with warehouse management systems (WMS), inventory tracking software, and material handling equipment is typically required. Attention to detail, reliability, and strong organizational skills help individuals excel in this role. These abilities ensure efficient inventory flow, minimize errors, and maintain smooth operations within supply chain environments.

What is a FIFO operator?

FIFO Operators are professionals responsible for managing inventory or materials using the 'First In, First Out' (FIFO) method. This means they ensure that the oldest stock or materials are used or shipped out before newer items. FIFO Operators typically work in warehouses, manufacturing plants, or logistics companies, and their role helps reduce waste and maintain product quality. They may use inventory management systems and follow strict safety and handling procedures. Proper FIFO management is critical for industries dealing with perishable goods or items with expiration dates.

What are some common challenges a FIFO operator faces when working on a fly-in fly-out roster?

FIFO Operators often experience challenges such as adjusting to long shifts, being away from home for extended periods, and adapting to changing work environments. The role typically involves working in remote locations with a structured roster, usually two weeks on and one week off. Maintaining communication with family, managing fatigue, and building strong team relationships are important for success. Many employers provide support services and recreational facilities onsite to help operators manage these challenges and maintain work-life balance.

Job description

JOB POSTING
FINISHED GOODS WAREHOUSE OPERATOR, Hybrid-10AM to 6:30 PM
Company Description
Titan Coatings, the only privately held Coil and Extrusions Coatings Manufacturer in the United States, is your manufacturer of high-quality coatings for the protection of metal surfaces. We create innovative products in our state-of-the-art facility, and we ensure only the highest quality. We are a family owned and operated company that goes back five generations.
Job Summary
We are currently seeking a Finished Goods Warehouse Operator! Qualified candidates will have a high level of integrity and the essential attributes to be a vital part of a winning team. We are looking for a highly motivated, dependable team member who wants to help Titan Coatings grow to record levels.
As a Finished Goods Warehouse Operator, you will play a critical role on the Production and Logistics Team. You are the final link between Titan's manufacturing operation and the customer - the last person to touch the product before it leaves the building - and the accuracy, speed, and care you apply directly determine whether Titan delivers on its commitments. You will handle drums, totes, and pails of both solvent-based and water-based coatings, operate a forklift every shift, and prepare DOT hazmat shipments. Your internal customers are the Filling Department and Quality Control. This position reports to our Production Supervisor / Shipping Manager.
Job Responsibilities
Core warehouse, safety, and housekeeping responsibilities required of every Finished Goods Warehouse Operator:
  • Comply with all site rules, annual refresher training, and safe job procedures.
  • Wear safety glasses at all times in the plant and warehouse - no exceptions.
  • No cell phones on the factory floor or in the warehouse; leave them in the locker room.
  • Safe forklift operation: speed limits, horn at blind corners, seatbelt, no passengers, and yield to pedestrians.
  • Daily pre-shift forklift inspection; never run equipment that fails, and report deficiencies immediately.
  • Observe load-capacity and stacking-height limits; operate pallet jacks, hand trucks, and strapping tools safely.
  • Follow all SDS and spill-response procedures; report spills, near-misses, and injuries immediately.
  • Continuous housekeeping and 5S; keep travel lanes, exits, and safety equipment unobstructed.
  • Support cycle and annual inventory counts; complete department paperwork and shipping logs.
  • Report equipment failures to Maintenance; DOT hazmat training and applicable RCRA knowledge required.

As the Finished Goods Warehouse Operator, the following responsibilities also apply:
  • Receive sealed drums, totes, and pails from filling; verify labels, seals, and counts against the batch ticket before put-away.
  • Transport finished goods to storage by forklift; stack pallets safely within approved heights.
  • Update inventory in Datacor on put-away; support WMS barcode scanning as it is implemented.
  • Segregate and clearly mark QC-hold, customer-hold, and rework product away from shippable goods.
  • Pick orders per the shipping schedule and pick list; verify product, batch, quantity, and container type exactly.
  • Stage orders by customer, carrier, and pickup time; inspect labels, seals, and container condition.
  • Load trucks by forklift; confirm the carrier and truck match the order, and secure loads against shifting.
  • Verify loaded quantity against the bill of lading and packing list; obtain the driver's signature.
  • Prepare DOT hazmat paperwork and trailer placarding for solvent-based (Class 3 flammable) shipments.
  • Maintain accurate inventory and FIFO rotation; store goods per NFPA flammable-liquid requirements.
  • Complete shipping documentation accurately; enter and close shipments in Datacor promptly.
  • Work with urgency for OTIF and flag any threat to on-time shipment; coordinate with filling, return promptly from breaks, pursue safety/efficiency/quality improvements, and perform all other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications
  • 1+ years in a warehouse, shipping, or distribution role; paint, coatings, or chemical experience preferred.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Current forklift certification, or ability to obtain it within 30 days of hire.
  • Ability to read shipping documents, pick lists, and written procedures accurately.
  • Basic math skills and the ability to use a computer or handheld device for ERP entry.
  • Strong attention to detail under time pressure: products, batches, quantities, and labels.
  • Knowledge of Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality regulations; team-player attitude.
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs regularly and up to 75 lbs occasionally, and maneuver drums.
  • Preferred: DOT Hazmat certification (49 CFR 172.704), WMS and Datacor experience, OSHA 10-Hour, bilingual (English/Spanish).
