What is a FIFO Automation Engineer?

A FIFO Automation Engineer is a professional who specializes in automating industrial or mining processes on a 'Fly-In, Fly-Out' (FIFO) work schedule. This role typically involves designing, programming, and maintaining automated systems used in remote or resource-based locations. FIFO Automation Engineers often travel to sites for specific periods, then return home for rest periods. Their work helps increase operational efficiency, safety, and productivity by implementing and supporting technologies such as PLCs, SCADA, and robotics in challenging environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FIFO Automation Engineer?

To excel as a FIFO Automation Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical, control systems, or automation engineering, often with a relevant degree and experience in mining or industrial environments. Familiarity with PLC/SCADA systems, automation programming languages, and certifications such as TUV or Siemens/Allen-Bradley credentials are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability to remote FIFO rosters, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for success in this role. These competencies ensure the reliable and safe operation of automated systems, minimize downtime, and facilitate teamwork in challenging, remote work settings.

What are some common challenges faced by FIFO Automation Engineers on remote sites?

FIFO Automation Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to varying site conditions, managing equipment downtime, and troubleshooting automation systems with limited on-site support. Working on a fly-in-fly-out basis also means adjusting to long shifts and being away from home for extended periods. However, most teams foster strong camaraderie, and robust communication tools are available to collaborate with off-site specialists, making problem-solving more efficient.
