Do you plan to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA)? Spend Summer 2027 in beautiful Juneau, Alaska and gain hands-on experience in government auditing through our internship program! Intern Auditors work onsite and perform a variety of audit tasks under the supervision of CPAs. This role requires U.S. work authorization. We assign meaningful, professional-level work that includes preparing electronic audit workpapers to document audit procedures, tests, and conclusions.

Compensation: $36.25/hour (paid $2,718.75 biweekly), with full State of Alaska benefits

Hours: 37.5 per week

Start/end dates: May 10-August 13, 2027 (flexibility possible)

Overview: A summer internship with the State of Alaska's Division of Legislative Audit offers students or recent graduates a hands-on introduction to governmental auditing. Interns are exposed to multiple aspects of the audit process, including performing audit procedures and preparing workpapers. Work is reviewed by experienced auditor employees. The Division's mission—enhancing government operations and accountability—is embedded in the work Intern Auditors perform. Working on a team of auditors, interns are placed in a caring, professional, and educational environment designed to help them learn and thrive throughout the fourteen-week program. This position is fully onsite in Juneau, Alaska. Interns coming from out of town may qualify for a modest housing stipend.

Some or all of the following may be performed by Intern Auditors:

• Auditing procedures and techniques in accordance with audit standards established by the AICPA and government audit standards issued by the Comptroller General of the United States
• Preparation of workpapers that are thorough, complete, and accurate, documenting audit procedures
• Research into laws, regulations, contracts, and grant agreements to determine if programs and processes are being administered accordingly
• Identifying errors and summarizing results of findings in accordance with audit procedures
• Interviews with state agency personnel regarding agency operations and documentation of the interviews
• Obtaining audit documentation from state agency personnel
• Other duties as assigned

Summer interns should possess the following abilities:

• Communicating effectively, and in a professional manner, both verbally and in writing
• Evaluating business processes, identifying risks, and determining appropriate controls
• Reading, comprehending, and analyzing information
• Researching and interpreting federal and state laws, rules, and regulations
• Maintaining confidential information
• Working individually or in a team environment and fostering a positive work atmosphere
• Working effectively under pressure and meeting frequent deadlines
• Demonstrating basic proficiency in Microsoft Excel

Distinguishing Characteristics:

• This is a fully exempt job class under Alaska Statute 39.25.110(3).
• Positions in the Division of Legislative Audit are required to be politically neutral.
• Currently, we are not providing visa employer sponsorships.

Minimum Qualifications:

The Division of Legislative Audit seeks juniors, seniors, or recent alumni, pursuing or possessing a bachelor's or master's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or related fields.

Candidates must have completed Intermediate Accounting courses prior to the start date, plan to enter the workforce full-time in 2027 or 2028, and have a minimum GPA of 3.25.

Additional Required Information:

In addition to completing and submitting the Workplace Alaska application, a cover letter and all relevant postsecondary transcripts are required to be submitted as part of this application package. The cover letter should describe your strengths, education, and experience. Your cover letter must also describe why you want to work for the Alaska Division of Legislative Audit.

Special Instructions For Foreign Education:

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above requirements, if applicable. If utilizing this education you must show that the education credentials have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and that such education has been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs; or an accredited U.S. state university reports the other institution as one whose transcript is given full value, or full value is given in subject areas applicable to the curricula at the state university. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.

Selection Procedure:

Applicants are required to meet the minimum qualifications as outlined above.
