Job Description:
Brown University Athletics and Recreation is currently seeking candidates for the full-time Assistant Coach, Field Hockey position. Located in Providence, Rhode Island, and a member of the Ivy League, our intercollegiate athletics program consists of 34 varsity teams with approximately 1,000 athletes who participate within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA-D1).
This role serves as the primary assistant to the Head Coach, taking on significant responsibilities in practice planning, game strategy, and player mentorship. This role focuses on individual player development and serves as a direct line of communication between the Head Coach and student-athletes.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 2-4 years of coaching experience, preferably at the collegiate level.
  • Strong knowledge of the sport and player development.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Solid understanding of the sport's rules, strategies, and techniques.
  • Working knowledge of NCAA/league compliance requirements.
  • Knowledge of athlete skill development and position-specific training.
  • Understanding of recruiting processes and athlete evaluation methods.
  • Awareness of injury prevention and safe training practices.
  • Strong instructional and coaching skills for both individual and team development.
  • Effective communication skills with athletes, colleagues, and recruits.
  • Organization and time management skills.
  • Ability to utilize video analysis and performance review tools.
  • Basic data collection and performance tracking skills.
  • Ability to assist in designing and executing practice plans.
  • Ability to evaluate athlete performance and provide constructive feedback.
  • Ability to support recruiting initiatives and relationship-building with prospective athletes.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and respond effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to compliance standards.
  • Ability to contribute positively to a collaborative and inclusive team environment.
  • Possess a willingness and ability to support and promote a diverse and inclusive campus community.

All division employees are required to demonstrate exemplary ethical conduct and conformance to NCAA rules and regulations; the duties of the position are to be performed in compliance with all NCAA, Ivy League rules and regulations; and any rules violations on behalf of themselves or any knowledge of violations within the division are to be reported to the compliance office and appropriate parties.
Employees in coaching positions must receive annual rules education on NCAA legislation related to recruiting by the compliance office and maintain current AED/CPR and First Aid certification (certification is available at no cost through the Division).
