What is a field testing engineer?

Field Testing Engineers are professionals who conduct tests and evaluations of products, systems, or equipment in real-world environments outside of the laboratory. They collect data, troubleshoot issues, and ensure that products meet performance and safety standards under actual usage conditions. Field Testing Engineers often work in industries such as telecommunications, automotive, and electronics, collaborating with development teams to refine and improve products based on test results. Their work is crucial for validating product reliability and functionality before large-scale deployment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a field testing engineer?

To thrive as a Field Testing Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, data analysis, and troubleshooting, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with testing equipment, data acquisition systems, and often industry-specific software such as LabVIEW or MATLAB is important. Strong problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and effective communication are vital soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate field data collection, effective collaboration, and high-quality results in diverse and often unpredictable environments.

What are some common challenges faced by field testing engineers during on-site testing, and how can they be addressed?

Field Testing Engineers often encounter challenges such as unpredictable environmental conditions, equipment malfunctions, and communication barriers with site personnel. To address these, it is important to thoroughly prepare by double-checking equipment before arrival, maintaining clear communication channels, and remaining adaptable to changing site requirements. Building strong relationships with local teams and staying updated on safety protocols also contribute to smoother on-site operations.

Job description

Prysmian North America is seeking a highly motivated High Voltage Test Engineer to join our High Voltage Cable Testing Team. This role is responsible for supporting the commissioning, maintenance, and diagnostic testing of medium-voltage (MV), high-voltage (HV), and extra-high-voltage (EHV) underground cable systems across North America.
As a High Voltage Test Engineer, you will play a key role in delivering safe, reliable, and high-quality field-testing services using advanced high-voltage test equipment, including Prysmian resonant AC test systems and partial discharge (PD) diagnostic technologies. You will collaborate with customers, project managers, installation teams, cable splicers, and engineering personnel to ensure successful project execution while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and technical excellence.
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related engineering discipline from an accredited four-year university.

Required Qualifications
  • Strong knowledge of MV, HV, and EHV underground cable systems and power system fundamentals.
  • Experience with commissioning, acceptance, maintenance, and diagnostic testing of underground cable systems.
  • Hands-on experience with resonant AC withstands testing, PD measurements, sheath integrity testing, impedance testing, and other high-voltage diagnostic technologies.
  • Working knowledge of IEEE and IEC standards applicable to cable testing and commissioning.
  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and technical problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to prepare professional technical documentation.
  • Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating within multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills.
  • Willingness to travel extensively to customer sites throughout North America.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform commissioning, maintenance, and diagnostic testing of MV, HV, and EHV underground cable systems.
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain Prysmian resonant AC test systems, partial discharge (PD) measurement equipment, and other specialized high voltage testing and diagnostic equipment.
  • Develop project-specific test plans, testing procedures, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and pre-job safety documentation.
  • Coordinate project schedules, equipment logistics, personnel, and field resources to ensure safe and efficient project execution.
  • Mobilize, setup, commission, operate, maintain, and demobilize high-voltage testing equipment at customer locations.
  • Lead and support field technicians during testing activities while ensuring compliance with Prysmian safety policies, customer requirements, and industry standards.
  • Analyze test data, interpret results, evaluate cable system performance, and provide technical recommendations to customers and internal project teams.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports documenting testing procedures, results, observations, and recommendations.
  • Work closely with installation engineers, cable splicers, system engineers, project managers, and customers to understand project requirements and develop effective testing strategies.
  • Assist customers in troubleshooting cable system issues and recommend practical technical solutions.
  • Maintain, inspect, calibrate, and verify high voltage testing equipment to ensure safe and accurate operation.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to enhance testing processes, equipment utilization, operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
  • Represent Prysmian professionally while delivering exceptional technical service and building strong customer relationships.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience commissioning and testing underground transmission cable systems rated up to 500 kV or higher.
  • Knowledge of cable diagnostics, fault location, condition assessment, partial discharge, and asset management techniques.
  • Demonstrated project coordination or field leadership experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and technical reporting software.

Working Conditions
  • Travel up to 50% throughout North America, with occasional international travel.
  • Work in electrical substations, industrial facilities, construction sites, utility environments, and outdoor locations.
  • Ability to work extended hours, weekends, holidays, and utility outage schedules as project requirements dictate.
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands associated with field testing and commissioning activities.

Additional Requirements
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future employer-sponsored visa sponsorship.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
