What is a field service mechanic?

Field service mechanics are skilled technicians who travel to various worksites to diagnose, repair, and maintain machinery or equipment. They often work on heavy equipment, vehicles, or specialized machinery used in industries like construction, agriculture, or manufacturing. Unlike mechanics who work in a fixed shop, field service mechanics provide on-site support, ensuring that equipment downtime is minimized. Their job typically involves troubleshooting problems, performing preventive maintenance, and sometimes training equipment operators. This role requires strong technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and a willingness to work in diverse and sometimes challenging environments.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a field service mechanic?

To thrive as a Field Service Mechanic, you need a solid understanding of mechanical systems, troubleshooting, and equipment repair, often supported by a technical diploma or relevant certifications. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), and industry-specific equipment is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, customer service orientation, and the ability to work independently are vital soft skills for this role. These skills ensure quick, effective repairs and customer satisfaction, which are crucial for minimizing equipment downtime and maintaining business operations.

What challenges do field service mechanics face when working on-site, and how can they be addressed?

Field Service Mechanics often encounter unpredictable environments, such as inclement weather, remote locations, or limited access to specialty tools and parts. These challenges require adaptability, strong problem-solving skills, and effective communication with dispatchers and clients. To address these issues, it's important to prepare thoroughly before each assignment, maintain flexibility in troubleshooting, and build strong relationships with both the support team and customers. Many employers also provide ongoing training and support to help mechanics stay up-to-date with the latest equipment and repair techniques.

  • Follow established field service communication procedures, including issuing RMA requests, completing work orders, documenting service actions, submitting expense and trip reports, and maintaining accurate service records.
  • Perform software upgrades on WAT units and other equipment when required, ensuring compatibility and proper configuration at the customer site.
  • Support Senior Technicians during complex field service jobs, large-scale installations, or customer escalations as assigned.
  • Perform other field-related service duties as assigned, including emergency repairs, customer training, projects, and equipment audits.

  • Experience in packaging automation systems is preferred.
  • Experience using PC applications, including Microsoft Office Suite, for documentation and reporting.
  • Proficiency using hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment (e.g., multimeters).
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical issues to non-technical individuals.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams, wiring schematics, manuals, and assembly drawings.
  • Strong customer service, organization, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in the field with minimal supervision while managing daily schedules and customer needs.
  • Capability to make real-time decisions, evaluate equipment conditions, and provide accurate technical assessments.
  • Commitment to accurate record keeping of all service activity performed on IPG/Better Packages equipment.
  • Ability to travel frequently, including overnight travel, by car or air, averaging 30% of the work week.
  • Must hold a valid driver's license/Real ID with a good driving record and/or passport to aid travel.

  • Ability to lift up to 60 lbs., carry tools or parts up to 20 lbs., and maneuver equipment using carts weighing up to 60 lbs.
