What is a field service engineer?

Field service engineers, also known as engineering technicians, travel to client service sites to demonstrate, install, or repair products and systems. Field service engineers install and repair a variety of equipment and networks, including scientific instruments and computerized security systems. Each call is different; the skill set you need for these positions varies depending on the industry in which you work.

What does a field service engineer do?

A Field Service Engineer is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing equipment at customer sites. They often travel to different locations to troubleshoot technical issues, perform preventative maintenance, and ensure equipment operates efficiently. Field Service Engineers also provide training to clients on the proper use of equipment and may collaborate with engineering teams to improve product performance. The role requires strong technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and excellent customer service.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a field service engineer?

To thrive as a Field Service Engineer, you need strong technical knowledge in electronics or mechanical systems, troubleshooting skills, and typically a relevant engineering degree or certification. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, maintenance software, and industry-specific equipment is crucial for effective on-site repairs and installations. Excellent communication, customer service orientation, and problem-solving abilities enable you to work independently and build strong client relationships. These skills ensure timely and effective technical support, customer satisfaction, and minimal equipment downtime in the field.

What are some common challenges field service engineers face when working on client sites, and how can they overcome them?

Field Service Engineers often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting unfamiliar equipment, managing tight schedules, and adapting to diverse work environments. Success in this role requires strong problem-solving abilities, clear communication, and flexibility. Building good rapport with clients and being proactive in seeking technical support from colleagues also help overcome obstacles. Regularly updating technical knowledge and being prepared for travel or on-call work further ensure smooth service delivery.

Job Description

Formulatrix, the leading provider of protein crystallization automation and liquid handling solutions, seeks a field engineer to join our world-class support team. You should enjoy working with people, take pride in fixing customer issues, and enjoy travel. The best person for this position thinks on their feet, learns quickly, and enjoys tinkering with hardware as well as software. This position will be primarily focused (but not necessarily limited to) on our line of liquid handling and protein crystallography instruments.

You will troubleshoot high-end biotech automation equipment, enabling researchers to keep searching for the next cure. Our products are used for drug research and assay development. In addition to protein crystallography automated microscopy imagers, we also provide automated liquid handlers -- one day you might be digging into a log file to determine why an image isnโ€™t following an imaging schedule; another you might be figuring out why a liquid handler isnโ€™t dispensing properly -- and the next you might be demonstrating new features of the latest software to a customer group.

You will report to the North American Support Manager, work alongside a team of dedicated engineers, and provide feedback to product managers and the documentation manager.

Responsibilities
  • On-site installations and maintenance of lab equipment on the east coast, and possibly across the U.S. depending on the needs of our customers and the schedules of other support engineers.
  • Customer training and support from home and in the field, via phone, email, or remote access tools such as TeamViewer.
  • Up to 60% overnight travel. This means up to 60% of your time could be spent traveling (usually by flight) anywhere within the US or Canada, or (on very rare occasions) potentially even beyond, depending on the situation.
  • Record customer interactions and issues in the internal CRM database.
  • Provide detailed notes of on-site support work.
  • Follow up with engineers and product managers to ensure customer issues have been addressed.
Requirements
  • An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Science or Engineering is desirable but not required.
  • Affinity for fixing things.
  • Comfortable with computers, networking, and basic IT-related activities.
  • Quick learner with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with robotics, software, microfluidics, and optics are a plus.
