What is the difference between Field Robotics Operator vs Drone Pilot?

AspectField Robotics OperatorDrone Pilot
CredentialsTechnical certifications, safety trainingRemote pilot certification, FAA license
Work EnvironmentConstruction sites, agricultural fields, industrial areasOpen outdoor spaces, urban environments
Industry UsageMining, agriculture, constructionMedia, surveying, inspection

Both roles involve operating remotely controlled equipment, but a Field Robotics Operator typically manages ground-based robots in industrial or agricultural settings, while a Drone Pilot operates aerial drones for surveying, inspection, or media purposes. The skills and certifications overlap in remote operation and safety, but the work environments and industry applications differ significantly.

How much do field robotics operators make?

Field robotics operators typically earn between $50,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and the complexity of the equipment they operate. Higher salaries are common for those with specialized skills, certifications, or experience working with autonomous systems and remote controls.

What does a field robotics operator do?

A field robotics operator is responsible for operating, monitoring, and maintaining robotic systems used in outdoor environments such as agriculture, construction, or mining. They troubleshoot technical issues, ensure safety protocols are followed, and often use remote controls or specialized software to manage robotic equipment. This role typically requires technical skills, familiarity with robotics tools, and adherence to safety standards.

Job description

Field Robotics Engineer

Oakland, CA
Full-time

First, the good news: The world now has over 2 terawatts of cumulative solar capacity and solar PV is the lowest-cost source of energy generation worldwide.

The challenge: The world must build 3 terawatts of new solar capacity every year for the next 25 years to meet surging power demand and decarbonize.

Planted is creating new technology to overhaul how the industry develops and builds solar power resources. We're expanding our team of ambitious, curious, and hands-on engineers and operators who want to accelerate that transition. Come take ownership of large parts of our product, company, and business development as we help power the world with 100% clean and abundant energy.

About The Role

As a Field Robotics Engineer, you will be responsible for the reliability and uptime of Planted's robotic installation machines at utility scale solar projects. You will lead data collection in the field, diagnose and fix issues, as well as support onsite operations such as operator training and machine logistics. As a critical bridge between R&D and project operations, you will enhance real-world robotic performance through rigorous testing and validation, while coordinating with other engineering teams to ensure timely delivery of new features. Furthermore, you will foster constructive relationships with third-party labor providers to enhance productivity and accountability. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with a talented and cross-functional engineering and business team with a high degree of empowerment and autonomy.

The salary range for this full-time position is $90,000 - $110,000 plus stock options and benefits. Pay within the range is based on candidate experience, job-specific skills, education, and work location. The target experience for the position is 2 - 5+ years.

  • Operate, maintain, and enhance field testing tools and diagnostic equipment to support data-driven decision making
  • Collaborate with different engineering teams to prioritize, refine, and deliver updates that improve robot performance and project installation success
  • Ensure technical documentation and training procedures stay up to date
  • Deliver clear, structured training to external partners to enable safe and efficient use of the company's robotic installation machines
  • Build detailed project schedules that reflect field performance, outline key milestones and ensure commercial projects stay on track
  • Serve as a trusted representative of the company when engaging with external partners and customers

QUALIFICATIONS
