Field Research Associate information

What is a field research associate?

Field Research Associates are professionals who collect, analyze, and interpret data outside of a traditional laboratory or office setting, often in natural or community environments. They support research projects by conducting surveys, experiments, observations, or interviews in the field. Their work is crucial for gathering accurate, real-world data that informs scientific studies, policy decisions, or product development. Field Research Associates may work in areas such as environmental science, social research, agriculture, or public health.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a field research associate?

To thrive as a Field Research Associate, you need a background in scientific research methods, data collection, and statistical analysis, often supported by a relevant bachelor’s or master’s degree. Familiarity with tools such as GPS devices, data management software, and laboratory equipment, along with certifications in field safety or research ethics, is typically required. Strong attention to detail, adaptability to changing environments, and effective communication skills are essential soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure accurate data collection, reliable research outcomes, and smooth field operations, which are critical for advancing scientific knowledge.

What are some common challenges faced by field research associates, and how can they be managed effectively?

Field Research Associates often encounter challenges such as unpredictable weather conditions, logistical issues in remote locations, and maintaining data accuracy in dynamic environments. To manage these effectively, it's important to plan thoroughly, maintain flexible schedules, and utilize reliable data collection tools. Strong communication with the research team and adaptability to unexpected changes are also key to ensuring successful fieldwork and high-quality research outcomes.

The main difference is that a Field Research Associate typically conducts outdoor, on-site data collection and fieldwork, requiring more outdoor skills and sometimes certifications. Overview

At KPMG in Canada, our people bring their unique perspectives to Canada’s most important challenges. Here, you can build momentum that reaches beyond our business, develop skills for the future, and take ownership of your career with support at every stage. Join a firm where your career can make a difference.

KPMG Corporate Finance Inc. is the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC)-regulated entity through which KPMG LLP provides investment banking services in Canada. KPMG Corporate Finance services are principally comprised of merger, acquisition and divestiture services and financing services, including raising debt and equity capital. Our growing diversified investment banking team is seeking an Associate Vice President (Manager) to join our team in Calgary, Edmonton or Winnipeg to play a key role across all aspects of transaction delivery.

What you will do
  • Assume responsibility for the day-to-day execution and delivery of service on a range of corporate finance projects.
  • Draft pitch books, teasers, confidential information memorandums (CIM) and other transaction process documentation.
  • Manage, mentor and train junior corporate finance professionals (Analysts & Associates).
  • Prepare and review various forms of financial analysis, including complex financial models.
  • Conduct market and industry research, detailed financial analysis and business valuations.
  • Assist in the identification of potential acquisition targets, purchasers and/or investors.
  • Undertake engagement and practice management responsibilities, including billings and adherence to professional practice requirements.
  • Lead proactive business development and deal initiation activities.

This role provides significant learning opportunities and increasing responsibility over time. At times, business needs arise, and employees are required and agree to work beyond their normal workday or work week to fulfill the accountabilities required for their job. Likewise, employees need time to devote to personal matters, and our approach to flexibility provides for this.

What you bring to the role

  • 4-6 years of relevant post-graduate experience, in Corporate Finance, or a related field e.g. transaction advisory, investment banking, private equity, or corporate development.

  • CPA, CBV or CFA designations are all considered assets.
  • Strong technical finance proficiency, including knowledge of financial statements and general accounting principles.
  • Demonstrated experience or ability in training and developing junior staff members.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (English).

What we offer:
