The Utility Locator is responsible for identifying, locating, and marking the location of subsurface utilities to prevent accidental damage or service disruptions during construction excavation activities. This role supports company standards through accurate construction inspection and utility documentation, contributing directly to safety, service continuity, and operational success.

Responsibilities:

What You Will Do

In all of your duties, you will have a relentless, obsessive, yet disciplined approach to manage all details to perfection and deliver desired results.

Identify and mark buried fiber optic cable using utility prints and locating equipment.

Utilize utility maps, engineering drawings, GIS information, and electronic locating tools.

Read and interpret utility maps, prints, and aerial imagery.

Prepare reports and documentation related to completed work and issues encountered.

Investigate and document excavation incidents involving utility damage.

Prioritize and plan work activities based on locate requests and scheduling.

Mark underground assets using paint, flags, or other tools as appropriate.

Use laptops or mobile devices to manage excavation notices and communications.

Communicate effectively with contractors, utility reps, and internal teams.

Operate detection equipment to mark underground utilities within accuracy limits.

Perform light excavation if required to expose utilities.

Maintain assigned vehicles and equipment, ensuring cleanliness and functionality.

Demonstrate consistent safety compliance and professional behavior.

Participate in safety programs and report any hazards to supervisors.

Adhere to all company codes of conduct and job site policies.

Perform all additional duties necessary to support assigned responsibilities.

Two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

General knowledge of State and Local damage prevention regulations.

Understanding of safety related to motor vehicle operations, manhole entry, and fieldwork.

Knowledge of utility locating practices and procedures.

Knowledge of GIS/GPS and underground utility installation standards.

Basic understanding of construction practices.

Valid driver's license and ability to obtain DOT physical certification.

Must be at least 18 years old and able to pass pre-employment testing (MVR, drug screen, background check).

High school diploma or equivalent.

Ability to communicate professionally and work full-time in outdoor environments and all weather conditions.

Willingness to work independently or in a team setting, including shifts with overtime, on-call, or weekends.

CAD experience.

Utility construction and/or electrical technology background.

Basic GIS concepts understanding.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Must be able to perform physical labor in varied environmental conditions including extreme heat, wet or humid weather, dusty or poor visibility situations, and near traffic or heavy machinery. Must be able to lift manhole covers (100-300 lbs), walk multiple miles per day, and use simple hand tools. Must maintain a valid driver's license and work flexible shifts as needed.
