Field Engineer Manager information

What is a field engineer manager?

Field Engineer Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing teams of field engineers who work on-site to install, maintain, or repair equipment and systems. They coordinate project activities, manage resources, ensure compliance with safety regulations, and serve as the main point of contact between the company and clients during field operations. Their role combines technical engineering expertise with leadership and project management skills, ensuring that field projects are completed efficiently and to required standards.

How do field engineer managers balance on-site responsibilities with team leadership and administrative tasks?

Field Engineer Managers often split their time between on-site project oversight and off-site administrative duties such as scheduling, reporting, and team development. It is common to spend several days each week visiting project locations to ensure quality, resolve technical issues, and support field engineers directly. At the same time, they coordinate with upper management, clients, and other departments to align project goals and address logistical challenges. Effective time management and clear communication are essential to maintain project progress while supporting and mentoring team members.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a field engineer manager?

To thrive as a Field Engineer Manager, you need a solid background in engineering principles, project management, and team leadership, usually complemented by a relevant engineering degree and managerial experience. Familiarity with industry-specific technical tools, project management software (like MS Project or Primavera), and certifications such as PMP or PE are often required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills help you motivate teams and address challenges in dynamic field environments. These competencies ensure projects are executed efficiently, safely, and to specification, directly impacting organizational success and client satisfaction.

What is the difference between Field Engineer Manager vs Field Engineer?

Are you driven to grow, lead, and make a meaningful impact? At Apex, we're building more than a consulting and engineering firm—we're creating a place where your career accelerates, your contributions matter, and your potential is fully realized. We believe your growth is our growth, which is why we invest in your development at every stage of your career. All Apex positions are eligible for annual bonus opportunities, reinforcing our commitment to recognizing and rewarding meaningful contributions that drive our collective growth.

This role is eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus, subject to the terms and conditions of the Company's sign-on bonus program.

Our Northeast Division is a well-respected and award-winning group where career development, training, and mentoring co-exist with diverse civil, environmental, water resources, infrastructure, and traffic/transportation projects in a fast-paced and rewarding work environment.

Our New England region is hiring a Field Engineer to support the successful execution of infrastructure projects, predominantly located in the state of Massachusetts.  This role serves as the bridge between design and construction, ensuring that plans are accurately implemented in the field, while maintaining quality and schedule requirements, and keeping detailed notes and measurements for record documentation.

The Field Engineer will closely with project managers, design engineers, contractors, and clients to keep projects moving and resolve field issues in real time. While this position is primarily a field position and will require travel within Massachusetts, it also may provide opportunities for in-office work and opportunities to support design projects. Candidates must be local or willing to relocate to Massachusetts.

This position will be Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week with occasional overtime and work times may start as early as 7 am so candidates must be willing to adhere to that work schedule in order to be considered.

 Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a site representative on behalf of the engineer to verify construction aligns with design plans and specifications
  • Maintain detailed notes and measurements for record documentation
  • Coordinate with project managers, in-office engineers, contractors, and subcontractors to support day-to-day construction activities
  • Review drawings, specifications, and technical documents for constructability and accuracy
  • Monitor project progress, track quantities, and provide regular field reports and updates, on a daily and weekly basis
  • Perform submittal reviews, and complete construction administration paperwork and activities such as payment requisitions, meeting agendas and minutes, punch lists, RFI responses, and closeout paperwork
  • Prepare record drawings for as-built infrastructure, utilizing AutoCAD
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve field issues or design discrepancies in collaboration with the design team
  • Conduct quality control inspections to ensure compliance with specifications and standards
  • Assist with cost tracking, scheduling updates, and change order documentation

What we're looking for:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related engineering field
  • Strong understanding of construction methods and materials
  • Ability to read and interpret engineered drawings, plans, and specifications
  • Experience or ability and willingness to learn AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and/or similar tools
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying site conditions and travel to project locations as needed
  • Previous experience in construction, consulting, or field engineering is a plus
  • EIT certification or working toward licensure is preferred
  • Experience with public-sector infrastructure projects (DOT, municipal, water/wastewater, etc.) is preferred
  • A Valid Driver's License and clean driving history is required

#LI-JS1

Why you'll love working for us:

  • Company-subsidized medical and dental.
  • Company-paid life, short, and long-term disability.
  • 401k match, tuition assistance, and more.
  • Cross-training and the ability to work on a variety of projects.
  • Performance-based bonuses or other incentives.
  • Working with the best and brightest in the industry.
  • 2,000+ employee national firm with 70+ locations across the US.
