Fiber Splicing Independent Contractor information

What is a fiber splicing independent contractor?

A Fiber Splicing Independent Contractor is a self-employed professional who installs, repairs, and maintains fiber optic cables for telecommunications and internet services. They work with specialized tools to splice, test, and troubleshoot fiber connections for clients such as internet service providers, utility companies, or construction firms. Unlike full-time employees, independent contractors manage their own schedules, equipment, and contracts, often working on a project-by-project basis. This role requires technical expertise, industry certifications, and a strong understanding of fiber optic systems.

What are the typical work conditions and daily responsibilities for a fiber splicing independent contractor?

As a Fiber Splicing Independent Contractor, you can expect a combination of fieldwork and occasional office-based tasks, often working outdoors and sometimes in confined spaces or elevated areas. Daily responsibilities include preparing and splicing fiber optic cables, performing network tests, documenting completed work, and troubleshooting connectivity issues. You will frequently travel to various job sites and work both independently and as part of larger project teams. Flexibility and readiness to respond to urgent service calls, sometimes outside of normal business hours, are common in this role. This hands-on, technical environment rewards self-motivation, punctuality, and clear communication with colleagues and clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the fiber splicing independent contractor position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fiber Splicing Independent Contractor, you need expertise in fiber optic cable splicing, termination, and testing, often supported by relevant experience or technical training. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like OTDRs, fusion splicers, and certifications such as FOA or ETA are commonly expected. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently or in small crews will help you excel in this position. These abilities ensure that fiber networks are installed and maintained efficiently and with minimal service disruptions.

Job description

LINX is hiring Fiber Specialists for its travel-based team that deploys to enterprise, hyperscale, and hyperscale data center builds across the country. If you can independently run ribbon and loose tube fusion splicing, validate your own work against customer acceptance criteria on OTDR and OLTS, and you're looking for consistent, high-volume fiber work rather than one job site indefinitely, this role is built for you.

You'll be on the leading edge of the infrastructure buildout driving AI and GPU cluster deployment, working alongside some of the most technically demanding fiber environments in the industry today.

Pay: $40.00 to $45.00/hour

Where This Role Fits at LINX

The Fiber Team is a parallel specialist track within LINX’s low voltage field structure. It sits alongside, not on top of, the standard Technician through Superintendent ladder. Every role on the Fiber Team specializes in fiber splicing.

Fiber Technician --> Fiber Specialist → Sr. Fiber Specialist

What You'll Be Doing

Fusion Splicing and Fiber Infrastructure

  • Independently perform ribbon and loose tube fusion splicing, including butt splices, tie-ins, and restoration work
  • Build and dress splice enclosures and Fiber Distribution Frames (FDFs)
  • Install Line Interface Units (LIUs) and MPO panels
  • Perform mid-span entries and ring cuts
  • Maintain proper fiber routing, slack storage, and cable management to spec

Testing and Troubleshooting

  • Perform OTDR, OLTS, optical power meter, and Visual Fault Locator (VFL) testing
  • Configure testing parameters and validate results against customer acceptance criteria
  • Diagnose and resolve splice loss issues, connector contamination, and fiber routing problems at the root cause level

Documentation and Quality

  • Produce accurate splice records and complete fiber test packages
  • Update red lines and as-built documentation
  • Complete turnover documentation and perform quality inspections on your own completed work

Project Execution and Data Center Deployment

  • Read and interpret fiber drawings, rack elevations, and related construction documentation
  • Survey work areas and develop material lists to support project planning
  • Execute Enterprise, hyperscale, and AI cluster / GPU infrastructure fiber deployments
  • Coordinate directly with customers and other trades on-site

Crew Leadership and Development

  • Lead small crews of 5+ Fiber Technicians when assigned
  • Provide technical guidance to Fiber Technicians and mentor developing splicers in the field

Minimum Requirements

Required

  • 1-2+ years of hands-on experience performing advanced fusion splicing independently, in both ribbon and loose tube fiber
  • Demonstrated ability to perform OTDR, OLTS, optical power meter, and VFL testing and to validate results against customer acceptance criteria without supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to build and dress splice enclosures, FDFs, LIUs, and MPO panels
  • Ability to read and interpret fiber drawings and rack elevations
  • Ability to produce splice records, test packages, redlines, and turnover documentation that meet customer close-out standards
  • Willingness and ability to travel nationally on a continuous basis (this is a travel-based role with no fixed home market assignment)
  • Valid driver's license and current auto insurance
  • Ability to work independently at customer sites with minimal direct supervision

Preferred

  • BICSI Installer 2, Optical Fiber pathway
  • High density ribbon fiber splicing experience of 864 strand or higher
  • Prior hyperscale or enterprise ISP fiber deployment experience
  • 1+ year experience leading crews of 5+ technicians
  • Experience developing material lists and surveying fiber work areas

This Role Is Probably Not Right For You If

  • Your fiber experience is limited to loose tube splicing and you haven't run ribbon fusion splicing
  • You need a fixed job site and can't commit to sustained multi-market travel
  • Your splicing background is low-density enterprise work only, without exposure to the density and tolerances hyperscale or AI cluster environments demand

Compensation and Benefits

Pay Rate: $40.00 to $45.00/hour

Benefits:

  • 401(k) with 50% employer match on the first 5% contributed
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance with FSA and HSA options
  • Short and long-term disability coverage
  • 3 weeks PTO (vacation and sick combined)
  • 8 paid holidays
  • Manufacturer training and certification support
  • Meals & Incidental Per Diem paid for all travel
