What is a fiber contractor?

Fiber Contractors are professionals or companies specializing in the installation, maintenance, and repair of fiber optic cables and networks. They are responsible for laying fiber cables, splicing, testing, and ensuring high-quality connections for internet, telecommunications, and data transmission. Fiber Contractors often work with utilities, ISPs, and construction firms to deploy high-speed fiber networks in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. Their work is crucial for expanding broadband access and supporting modern communication infrastructure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fiber contractor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fiber Contractor, you need a solid understanding of fiber optic installation, splicing techniques, and safety practices, often supported by technical training or relevant certifications. Familiarity with tools like OTDRs (Optical Time Domain Reflectometers), fusion splicers, and reading network blueprints is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication with clients and team members are valuable soft skills. These competencies ensure efficient, high-quality installations and maintenance, minimizing downtime and ensuring client satisfaction.

What are the most common challenges fiber contractors face when working on installation projects?

Fiber Contractors often encounter challenges such as navigating complex site conditions, coordinating with multiple stakeholders (like property owners and utility companies), and adhering to strict safety and quality standards. Weather conditions and unexpected obstacles, such as underground utilities or difficult terrain, can also impact project timelines. Successful contractors are proactive communicators and problem-solvers, ensuring projects stay on schedule while maintaining compliance with all regulations and client requirements.

What is the difference between Fiber Contractor vs Fiber Installer?

AspectFiber ContractorFiber Installer
CredentialsMay require certifications like OSHA, fiber optic certificationsTypically requires fiber optic installation training and certifications
Work EnvironmentOversees projects, manages teams, works on construction sitesPerforms installation tasks, often on-site at customer locations or infrastructure sites
Employer & Industry UsageContracting companies, telecom providers, construction firmsTelecom companies, cable providers, network installation firms

Fiber Contractors oversee fiber optic projects, managing teams and coordinating installations, while Fiber Installers focus on the hands-on installation of fiber optic cables. Both roles require specialized certifications, but contractors typically have broader responsibilities including project management. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or service provider in the fiber optic industry.

Job description

About Us

Advanced Electric Systems (AES) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Quanta Services (NYSE: PWR), the largest utility contractor in North America. We are an electrical testing, maintenance, and repair company that specializes in high-voltage substations.

Based out of Salt Lake City, Utah, AES has completed projects across North America. As our country's electrical infrastructure is rapidly upgraded and expanded, our company's services are in an all-time high demand. Being a Quanta Services company provides us with immense operational bandwidth and allows us to employ the most highly skilled individuals across an array of challenging projects.

AES is an Equal Opportunity Employer and participates in E-Verify.

About this Role

Advanced Electric Systems is looking for skilled Journeyman Fiber Technicians to join our team and contribute to critical communication and electrical infrastructure projects across North America.

The majority of our fiber work involves OPGW (Optical Ground Wire) fiber splicing, testing, and installation on high-voltage transmission infrastructure. Candidates should have experience with OPGW fiber systems and be comfortable working in and around transmission-line environments.

This is a hands-on field leadership role requiring strong technical skills, the ability to run and coordinate field crews, and the ability to communicate professionally with customers, project managers, engineers, and other contractors. The Journeyman Fiber Technician will be expected to lead by example, maintain high-quality workmanship, and ensure projects are completed safely and efficiently.

This is a traveling position, and regular travel is an essential requirement of the job. Technicians must be willing and able to travel to various project locations, often outside of their home area, for extended periods of time. The position may require overnight stays, extended project assignments, and travel based on current project needs. Applicants must be willing to travel regularly as a condition of employment.

We are actively hiring in Heber City, Utah and Austin, Texas, while continuing to expand our team to support growing regional demand.

As part of the Quanta Services family, you'll gain the stability, resources, training, and long-term career opportunities that come with being connected to the largest utility contractor in North America.

What You'll Do

As a Journeyman Fiber Technician, you will play a key role in delivering fiber optic infrastructure that supports modern communication and electrical transmission systems. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Perform OPGW fiber optic splicing, installation, testing, and troubleshooting
  • Work primarily with OPGW fiber associated with high-voltage transmission lines
  • Perform fusion and mechanical splicing of fiber optic cables
  • Test and troubleshoot fiber using OTDRs, power meters, VFLs, and related diagnostic equipment
  • Read and interpret OPGW splicing diagrams, fiber schematics, network maps, construction drawings, and technical documentation
  • Install and maintain OPGW splice enclosures, hardware, patch panels, and other fiber components
  • Perform fiber characterization and testing to verify network performance and quality
  • Troubleshoot fiber optic faults and identify issues using appropriate testing equipment
  • Lead, coordinate, and run fiber crews in the field
  • Direct daily crew activities to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and according to project specifications
  • Communicate directly with customers, project managers, engineers, inspectors, and other contractors
  • Represent AES professionally when interacting with customers and project stakeholders
  • Provide clear updates regarding project progress, job-site conditions, scheduling, and potential issues
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior and less-experienced technicians
  • Maintain accurate daily logs, splice records, test results, documentation, and project paperwork
  • Work closely with project managers and field teams to meet project schedules and quality standards
  • Identify and communicate potential project issues or delays to management and customers
  • Follow all company safety practices and site-specific safety requirements
  • Travel regularly to project locations throughout the region and/or across North America
  • Work extended and varying assignments based on project requirements
  • Stay overnight away from home as required by project location and schedule
What You'll BringRequired Qualifications
  • Proven experience in fiber optic installation, splicing, testing, and troubleshooting
  • Experience with OPGW fiber splicing is strongly preferred
  • Experience leading, running, or supervising fiber crews in the field
  • Ability to effectively communicate with customers, project managers, engineers, inspectors, and contractors
  • Strong understanding of fiber types, color codes, splice procedures, and industry standards
  • Proficiency with OTDRs, power meters, VFLs, and related fiber testing equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret fiber schematics, splice diagrams, construction drawings, and technical documentation
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly for work, including overnight and extended project assignments
  • Ability to work outdoors year-round, lift 50+ lbs, and work at heights or in confined spaces
  • Ability to work safely around high-voltage transmission infrastructure
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong attention to detail, work ethic, and commitment to safety
  • Ability to work independently while effectively coordinating with customers, crews, and management
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience specifically with OPGW installation, splicing, and testing
  • Previous experience leading OPGW or transmission fiber crews
  • Experience working on high-voltage transmission projects
  • OSHA 10 and CPR/First Aid certifications
  • CDL or willingness to obtain one
  • Experience with both underground and aerial fiber construction
