What is a ferry?

A ferry job typically involves working on a boat or ship that transports passengers, vehicles, or goods across bodies of water. Positions can range from deckhands and captains to ticketing agents and engineers. Responsibilities may include ensuring passenger safety, operating and maintaining the vessel, and assisting with loading and unloading. Ferry jobs often require maritime training, licensing, and knowledge of navigation and safety protocols. The work environment can vary depending on the route, vessel size, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the ferry position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Ferry Operator or Ferry Crew Member, you need knowledge of maritime safety procedures, vessel operation, and typically a relevant maritime certification such as a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) or state boat operator’s license. Proficiency with navigation tools, communication radios, and basic mechanical systems is usually required to ensure safe passage and vessel functionality. Strong customer service skills, teamwork, and the ability to remain calm under pressure help you succeed in passenger-facing situations. These skills are crucial for maintaining passenger safety, punctual service, and efficient ferry operations.

What are the typical work hours and scheduling expectations for ferry crew positions?

Ferry crew positions often require working in shifts that may include early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays, as ferry services typically operate outside of standard business hours to meet public or commuter demand. Schedules can vary based on the route and employer, but rotations may include several days on followed by days off, especially for longer routes. Crew members should be prepared for variable weather conditions and periods of downtime while the vessel is docked. Teamwork is essential, as you’ll be collaborating closely with other crew members to manage passenger safety, vessel operations, and customer service. Flexibility and a willingness to adapt to changing schedules are important for success in this dynamic environment.

Job description

Are you ready to work with great clients, build unique projects, and advance your building science and green building knowledge?

Are you an experienced, conscientious, goal-oriented carpenter with your eye on delivering the highest quality work, on budget?

Are you tired of working alone and ready to join a collaborative team?

We're hiring frame-to-finish Carpenters with 3-6 years of experience in the trades and all the usual tools. We offer excellent pay and benefits, including health insurance, retirement, and generous paid time off.
Juniper Design + Build is an award-winning residential design/build company working in Portland, Maine, and its surrounding communities. We create beautiful, energy-efficient, sustainably-built custom homes and renovations.

We do things differently
For starters, we're majority women-owned and managed. As much as we admire people with mad skills, we don't hire for skills alone. We have a diverse, respectful, and positive work culture-and a fantastic team-and we're looking for people who really understand the value of that and want to be part of it.

We're invested in helping to move the building industry to more environmentally sustainable practices. We focus on high-performance building and carbon reduction. We're all in on building science and strive to use optimal techniques and materials. We're always learning. You will be too.

What we're looking for
We're looking for a skilled carpenter with 4-7 years of hands-on experience across a range of residential construction projects. You should be confident in core carpentry tasks like framing, siding, window and door installation, air sealing, and finish work.

We're especially interested in candidates who are curious about high-performance building practices and eager to grow their knowledge of sustainable construction. Certifications like OSHA10, Lead Safe, and Net Zero are a plus-but not required to apply.

What we offer

  • Salary: Starting at $30 an hour and determined by experience
  • Health Insurance: 100% employer-paid
  • Paid Time Off: Starting at 120 hours/year, plus 15 holidays
  • Tool Allowance: $250 after 30 days, $500/year after one year
  • Short and Long Term Disability/Life Insurance
  • Retirement Plan: 3% company match (SIMPLE IRA)
  • Parking and Ferry Stipends
  • Support for professional training and development
  • A values-aligned team that genuinely enjoys working together
