24.00 USD Hourly
Job Summary:
The Boat Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for assisting with all marina services offered, quality control, maintains a clean and safe work area. Maintains and services boat fleet, marina and dock maintenance, boat refurbishing; including electrical, mechanical, carpentry and plumbing.
May through October work is based at the Seven Bays Marina
November through April work is based at the Keller Ferry Marina
Job Description:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Maintain Marina/Boat maintenance to include:
    • Motors:
      • Change engine oil and oil filters (every 100 hours, monthly)
      • Change external fuel filters (100hrs)
      • Change internal fuel filters (300hrs)
      • Change spark plugs (300hrs)
      • Change lower unit oil (200hrs)
      • Inspect propellers, lower units, and hubs (100hrs) and repair/replace as needed
      • Inspect powerhead for corrosion. Remove and coat with inhibitor
      • Buff and wax engine cowlings
      • Fill grease points
      • Knowledge of engine cooling systems and ability to replace impellers or water pump assemblies
      • Flush motors at the end of each day.
      • Ability to troubleshoot and repair/service tilt and trim systems
    • Steering:
      • Top off steering fluid
      • Inspect system for leaks, tighten loose fittings
      • Knowledge of cable, hydraulic, and Teleflex steering systems
    • Electrical:
      • Examine battery connections and clean corrosion
      • Test batteries and engine stators
      • Be able to troubleshoot and repair navigation, VHF, water pressure, sound, and light systems
      • Knowledge of marine water heater and air conditioning systems
    • Boats:
      • Inspect and repair gel coat chips and scratches
      • Pump out boats
      • Inspect and touch up deck paint
      • Repair rub rails
      • Remove surface rust from cleats, fasteners, etc. and protect.
      • Apply sun protectant to canvas tops and side curtains
      • Inspect and repair/replace Coast Guard Safety equipment (fire extinguishers, life jackets, VHF radio, anchors/tackle, EPIRB, flares, etc.)
      • Pump out waste tanks and fill water tanks with fresh water. Know how to properly sanitize each tank.
      • Knowledge of marine toilets and how to repair
      • Knowledge of marine propane gas systems
      • Knowledge of boat haul-outs and gear to inspect during this time
      • Knowledge of appropriate boat bottom paints and how to properly prepare and apply
    • Dock:
      • Be familiar with dock pump out systems and lift stations and be able to repair.
      • Be familiar with dockside fueling systems and tank monitors and know basic troubleshooting
      • Know how to properly secure boats to the dock and ensure that dock and boat hardware remains adequate for this.
      • Knowledge of proper boat fueling and fuel spill laws/procedures
  • Provide excellent customer service to guests, while directing customer issues to supervisor or unit manager.
  • Responsible for maintaining grounds keeping equipment and company vehicles.
  • Other Duties as assigned.

SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE
  • Partial High School education; High School Diploma/G.E.D. equivalent preferred.
  • Strong customer service abilities; actively looks for ways to assist customers and coworkers.
  • Ability to recognize when a problem has occurred and communicate it to management.
  • Ability to swim.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification.
  • Candidate should have their own tools necessary to carry out these tasks
  • Candidate should have adequate computer skills to create spreadsheets, access email, and use engine diagnostic software. Will be responsible for creating and maintaining a boat maintenance schedule and checklists for all boats. Good organization.
  • Candidate must be willing to travel to other units if need be.
  • Candidates must be personable and willing to work with the US Coast Guard during biannual haul-out inspection. Must comply with all Coast Guard regulations and inspector recommendations.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly frequent movements from place to place within the unit. Bend, lift, carry, reach/extend arms and hands above shoulder height frequently, or otherwise move in a constantly changing environment.
  • Lifting, carrying, and pushing up to 25 lbs. regularly, 30-35 lbs. frequently, and up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
  • Ability to stand for the entire work day.
  • Climbing steps regularly.
  • Working in wet and slippery conditions. Frequently working in an outdoor, hot, and damp environment.
  • Frequently immerses hands in water.
  • Withstanding temperature extremes in outdoor environments and inclement weather.
  • Reading and writing work-related documents in English.
  • Speech recognition and clarity, including the ability to understand the speech of customers and co-workers and the ability to speak clearly so that you can be understood by customers and co-workers in English.
  • Physical presence at the job site is essential to perform job duties.

  • All dock equipment and materials (gas pump, boats, ropes, anchors, among others)
