Job description

Summary
Patrols assigned schools; performs security inspections; investigates and responds to security incidents; assists with the application of a school security plan.
Qualifications
Required
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate.
  • One (1) year of experience in a security-related field.
    • Advanced degree(s) beyond the minimum degree requirement in a relevant field may be considered for some experience.
  • Must successfully complete compulsory certification training approved by the Virginia Center for School Safety within sixty days of hire and successfully complete recertification training annually.
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid motor vehicle operator's license with a good driving record.
  • Applicants must be at least 21 years old at the time of appointment.
  • May be required to work evenings, holidays, and weekends.
  • Knowledge of standard security procedures and the regulations and laws relating to grounds and building intrusion and trespassing.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact in a positive, professional manner with students, staff, and members of the public.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment under stressful and potentially dangerous conditions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Major Duties/Essential Functions
  1. Operates a School Board motor vehicle and patrols assigned schools to detect and deter fire, theft, vandalism, and other unauthorized activities and conditions which could endanger students, personnel, and property of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).
  2. Performs security inspections of schools, which may include manual checks of all exterior doors and windows.
  3. Assists school administrators with applying the school security plan and with other security-related matters.
  4. Promptly reports any suspicious activities or person(s) found to appropriate school officials, and police, if appropriate.
  5. Promptly reports to the security operations center and breach insecurity or suspicious activities found, ensures that all persons found on FCPS property after school or normal working hours have the proper authorization.
  6. Takes appropriate actions to remove unauthorized persons from school premises, cooperates with, and provides assistance to, fire and police department personnel responding to alarms.
  7. Completes and submits all required reports and forms on a timely basis.
  8. Assists custodians and other staff with SAFAS problems.
  9. May perform minor maintenance repairs after hours.
  10. Provides backup to the security system monitors and dispatches mobile units, as needed, or appropriate.
  11. Must conform to all requirements pursuant to the Code of Virginia and the Virginia Administrative Code and required to maintain current certification.
  12. Performs other related duties as required or assigned.

Work Environment/Physical Requirements
This job frequently operates outdoors in street environments near moving traffic. This job requires strength, agility, dexterity, and visual acuity to perform all tasks. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to regularly stand, sit, walk, bend, climb ladders, and/or kneel. There may be exposure to extreme heat and cold, outdoor environments, moving mechanical parts, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noises. This job requires lifting up to 25 lbs., and occasional lifting/moving up to 50 lbs.
