Job description

Summary
Organizes curriculum revision projects and develops, disseminates, and/or implements instructional programs and adapted curriculum materials for special education student populations; serves as a resource for the region, school, and departmental staff.
Qualifications
Required
  • Master's degree.
  • Four (4) years of experience teaching in a related specialty, some of which may have been in a supervisory or administrative role.
    • Advanced degree(s) beyond the minimum degree requirement in a relevant field may be considered for some experience.
  • Postgraduate educational license with endorsement(s) designated as appropriate to the assignment.
  • Knowledge of FCPS curriculum, instructional goals, procedures, and practices in field of specialization.
  • Knowledge of growth and development and learning theory in specialty.
  • Skill in assessment and evaluation of students with special needs or in special programs.
  • Skill in teaching adult learners.
  • Ability to manage curriculum development, in-service training, and related activities and provide a high level of instructional leadership for teachers and administrators.
  • Excellent human relations skills and ability to establish and maintain a successful cooperative working relationship with appropriate school communities, and school-based and central office staff.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Preferred
  • Endorsement in administration and supervision preK-12.

Major Duties/Essential Functions
  1. Plans, implements, monitors, evaluates, assesses, and modifies curriculum, instructional, and related programs in field of specialization.
  2. May act as the lead in team, project, or program activities.
  3. Reviews and selects texts and supplemental materials based on best practice coaching strategies and proven assistive technology.
  4. Designs or modifies teacher guides and activity materials and encourages the integration of the components.
  5. Serves as a resource for teachers providing assistance, demonstrations and/or model lessons.
  6. Monitors programs to ensure compliance with federal and state legislation and Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) directives.
  7. Reviews and interprets current research with respect to curriculum and instruction methodologies.
  8. Provides detailed program support to regions, schools, departments and their senior management teams.
  9. Collaborates with all FCPS departments and offices as required or requested.
  10. Participates in the selection and placement of staff for regular, after school, and summer school positions.
  11. Oversees all facets of summer school curriculum and instruction.
  12. Plans, designs, coordinates, facilitates, evaluates, and modifies staff development and in-service training programs for faculty, administrators and departmental personnel.
  13. Provides expertise with respect to the development of online courses, Abacus training, and course adaptations for special education students.
  14. Represents the curriculum and instruction office in the teacher performance evaluation program as an observer and/or intervention team member.
  15. Participates in ad hoc projects; develops and oversees budget related to area of specialty.
  16. Participates in the selection and purchase of specialized equipment and may have responsibility for custody, maintenance, and distribution of special equipment, instruments, etc.
  17. Assists with the assessment and placement of students to determine eligibility of certain special programs or services and may supervise students at non-school work sites or direct the work of contractors and consultants working with students.
  18. Oversees the operations of a special purpose center for students, teachers, parents, or other special population.
  19. Performs related duties as required or assigned.
