How much do fault detection jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 11, 2026, the average yearly pay for fault detection in the United States is $90,511.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $68,500.00 and $105,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is fault detection?

Fault detection refers to the process of identifying and diagnosing problems or malfunctions in systems, equipment, or processes. It involves monitoring data and signals to detect abnormalities that indicate a potential issue. Fault detection is widely used in industries such as manufacturing, engineering, and information technology to minimize downtime, ensure safety, and optimize performance. Advanced techniques may include sensor monitoring, data analytics, and automated alerts to quickly address faults before they lead to larger failures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fault detection specialist?

To thrive as a Fault Detection Specialist, you need strong analytical skills, electrical or mechanical engineering knowledge, and often a relevant technical degree or certification. Familiarity with building automation systems (BAS), fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) software, and data analytics platforms is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help specialists interpret data and collaborate with maintenance teams. These skills are essential for quickly identifying and addressing system inefficiencies or failures to ensure operational reliability and energy efficiency.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in fault detection roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Fault Detection often encounter challenges such as interpreting ambiguous data, managing false positives, and staying updated with evolving technologies or systems. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams—like maintenance, engineering, and IT—can help clarify issues and develop more robust detection strategies. Regular training, adopting advanced analytics tools, and maintaining clear documentation are effective ways to overcome these hurdles and ensure accurate, timely fault identification.

What is the difference between Fault Detection vs Maintenance Technician?

AspectFault DetectionMaintenance Technician
Primary RoleIdentify and diagnose faults or issues in systems or equipmentPerform repairs, preventive maintenance, and system upkeep
Required SkillsDiagnostic skills, troubleshooting, technical knowledgeMechanical, electrical skills, repair techniques
Work EnvironmentMonitoring systems, testing equipment, field or plant settingsRepair shops, industrial facilities, on-site maintenance
CertificationsOften requires technical certifications or training in diagnosticsTrade certifications, technical training in maintenance

Fault Detection specialists focus on identifying issues within systems, while Maintenance Technicians perform repairs and upkeep. Both roles require technical skills, but Fault Detection emphasizes diagnostics, whereas Maintenance Technicians focus on fixing and maintaining equipment.
