What is a FastAPI developer?

A FastAPI Developer is a software engineer who specializes in building web applications and APIs using the FastAPI framework, which is a modern, fast (high-performance) web framework for Python. FastAPI Developers are responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining backend services and APIs that are efficient, robust, and scalable. They often work with databases, authentication, and deployment processes, and ensure that the API endpoints adhere to best practices for security and performance. Their work is crucial for enabling smooth communication between front-end applications and backend systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FastAPI developer?

To thrive as a FastAPI Developer, you need strong proficiency in Python programming, RESTful API design, and experience with FastAPI, often supported by a background in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tools like SQL/NoSQL databases, Docker, and cloud platforms, as well as knowledge of asynchronous programming and API documentation tools like Swagger, is typically required. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set outstanding FastAPI developers apart. These skills are crucial for building reliable, high-performance APIs that meet modern application demands and facilitate seamless team collaboration.

What are some common challenges FastAPI developers face when integrating third-party services or APIs?

FastAPI Developers often encounter challenges when integrating third-party services, such as handling authentication protocols (like OAuth2), ensuring compatibility between JSON schemas, and managing asynchronous calls to avoid performance bottlenecks. It’s also common to troubleshoot and adapt to inconsistencies in external API documentation or rate limits. Collaborating closely with frontend teams and DevOps professionals helps streamline these integrations, ensuring robust, scalable API solutions.

What is the difference between Fastapi Developer vs Backend Developer?

AspectFastapi DeveloperBackend Developer
Required SkillsPython, Fastapi, REST APIs, async programmingMultiple languages (Python, Java, Node.js), REST/SOAP APIs, databases
Work EnvironmentWeb development, API-focused projects, microservicesBroader software development, server-side logic, database management
Industry UsageTech startups, SaaS, API-driven servicesEnterprise, e-commerce, finance, various industries

Fastapi Developers specialize in building high-performance APIs using Python and Fastapi, often within microservices architectures. Backend Developers have a broader scope, working with multiple languages and technologies to develop server-side applications across various industries. While Fastapi Developers focus on API efficiency, Backend Developers handle comprehensive backend systems.

  • Evaluates programming project requests, determining feasibility by applying knowledge of systems and identifying opportunities to enhance current capabilities.
  • Provides leadership in the planning, development, documentation, testing, and deployment of applications that are identified as opportunities to enhance current capabilities.
  • Interviews business stakeholders to define current operating procedures and clarify program objectives.
  • Employs structured analysis and design to build application specification documentation that includes flowcharts and diagrams to describe logical operations involved.
  • Provides knowledge and insight of the application and business of their respective area to other application and infrastructure teams.
  • Provides 24/7 production support.
  • Own integrations between internal systems and external Martech and other I.T. integrated platforms (Adobe Campaign, ERG and CRM systems, 3rd party SaaS providers).
  • Migrates legacy middleware workflows into modern, secure AWS-based architectures.
  • Builds and maintains cloud resources using AWS (EC2, S3, Lambda, RDS, VPC, IAM, CloudFormation/CDK).
  • Implements CI/CD pipelines with GitHub Actions (build, test, deploy).
  • Contributes to front-end features using JavaScript frameworks (React).

Additional Responsibilities

  • Performs modifications to code to correct errors.
  • Analyzes programs to increase operating efficiency or adapt to new requirements.
  • Creates and maintains documentation describing program development, logic, coding, and modifications to correct errors.
  • Performs business analysis and participates in the facilitation of training.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree BA/BS in Computer Science or equivalent experience required
  • At least 4-6 years of professional software engineering experience required
  • Capability to work independently; a self-starter who performs initiatives that provide solutions for business requirements with a logical approach to problem resolution.
  • Technical skills and experience to participate in the development and maintenance of business applications.
  • Strong project management and leadership skills to guide efforts of junior programmers.
  • Outstanding organizational, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Adaptable to ongoing changes in technology.
  • At least mid-level skills in the following technologies:
    • Scripting Languages: Bash, Powershell.
    • Strong understanding of SQL (PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server) and NoSQL (MongoDB, DynamoDB, Redis).
    • Familiarity with customer data platforms, ETL/ELT pipelines, or event-driven architectures.
    • Hands-on experience with AWS cloud services (C2, S3, Lambda, RDS, VPC, IAM, CloudFormation/CDK).
    • Strong experience building APIs with modern languages (REST APIs, Java and Spring Frameworks).
    • Graph QL, SOAP/XML, Webhooks, and Authentication Protocols (OAuth2, JWT, API keys, Basic Auth, SAML).
    • Knowledge of Data Formats (JSON, XML, CSV and Flat files).
    • Understanding of tools such as Postman, Swagger / OpenAPI, Python + Flask / FastAPI / Django REST.
    • Understanding of Messaging Queues (Kafka, RabbitMQ, SQS).
    • Middleware tools (Mulesoft, Apigee, Zapier, n8n, Workato).
  • AWS Certified Developer Preferred Or
  • AWS Certified DevOps Engineer Preferred
