What is a FastAPI developer?

A FastAPI Developer is a software engineer who specializes in building web applications and APIs using the FastAPI framework, which is a modern, fast (high-performance) web framework for Python. FastAPI Developers are responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining backend services and APIs that are efficient, robust, and scalable. They often work with databases, authentication, and deployment processes, and ensure that the API endpoints adhere to best practices for security and performance. Their work is crucial for enabling smooth communication between front-end applications and backend systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FastAPI developer?

To thrive as a FastAPI Developer, you need strong proficiency in Python programming, RESTful API design, and experience with FastAPI, often supported by a background in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tools like SQL/NoSQL databases, Docker, and cloud platforms, as well as knowledge of asynchronous programming and API documentation tools like Swagger, is typically required. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set outstanding FastAPI developers apart. These skills are crucial for building reliable, high-performance APIs that meet modern application demands and facilitate seamless team collaboration.

What are some common challenges FastAPI developers face when integrating third-party services or APIs?

FastAPI Developers often encounter challenges when integrating third-party services, such as handling authentication protocols (like OAuth2), ensuring compatibility between JSON schemas, and managing asynchronous calls to avoid performance bottlenecks. It’s also common to troubleshoot and adapt to inconsistencies in external API documentation or rate limits. Collaborating closely with frontend teams and DevOps professionals helps streamline these integrations, ensuring robust, scalable API solutions.

What is the difference between Fastapi Developer vs Backend Developer?

AspectFastapi DeveloperBackend Developer
Required SkillsPython, Fastapi, REST APIs, async programmingMultiple languages (Python, Java, Node.js), REST/SOAP APIs, databases
Work EnvironmentWeb development, API-focused projects, microservicesBroader software development, server-side logic, database management
Industry UsageTech startups, SaaS, API-driven servicesEnterprise, e-commerce, finance, various industries

Fastapi Developers specialize in building high-performance APIs using Python and Fastapi, often within microservices architectures. Backend Developers have a broader scope, working with multiple languages and technologies to develop server-side applications across various industries. While Fastapi Developers focus on API efficiency, Backend Developers handle comprehensive backend systems.

Job description

Phillips 66 & YOU - Together we can fuel the future
As a Lead Full-Stack Product Engineer on our Commercial technology team, you will lead the design, delivery, and evolution of strategic, trader-facing applications that turn complex data into intuitive tools. You'll manage a team of developers while also staying close to the code, shaping how traders, analysts, and data scientists access insights and make decisions. This is a chance to work near the desks on high-impact problems, building modern, API-first experiences over governed data products at Phillips 66.
What You'll Do
  • Lead the end-to-end development, implementation, and maintenance of strategic, business-critical applications that power trader- and analyst-facing platforms, ensuring they are reliable, secure, and performant.
  • Partner with traders, strategists, analysts, and data scientists to understand workflows, elicit complex business requirements, and translate them into intuitive tools, dashboards, and applications.
  • Define and maintain the application roadmap, including feasibility studies, cost-benefit analyses, and release plans that align with business priorities and governed data products.
  • Lead the design and build of modern user interfaces and APIs (for example, React front ends and Python/REST back ends) and oversee the full software development life cycle from concept through deployment and ongoing enhancements.
  • Analyze current ("as is") and future ("to be") business processes and data flows, identify gaps, and drive scalable solutions that simplify the user experience and accelerate question-to-decision time.
  • Plan, prioritize, and manage project work, budgets, and resources; assign and review work for a diverse development team and guide them toward high-quality delivery.
  • Establish and champion engineering standards, development practices, and deployment approaches (including CI/CD, versioning, and zero-downtime updates) that keep the platform maintainable and easy to extend.
  • Monitor platform usage, performance, and feedback, using data and insights to optimize features, improve adoption, and ensure the platform remains a thin, trusted layer over governed data products.
  • Provide expert technical and business advice to partners across IT and Commercial, helping teams navigate trade-offs, resolve complex issues, and shape future capabilities.

What You'll Bring - Required
  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • Bachelors degree
  • 6 or more years of lead-level full-stack development experience with a track record of owning and supporting production web applications end-to-end.
  • Advanced proficiency in React or comparable front-end frameworks with a focus on user experience and information-dense interfaces.
  • Advanced proficiency in Python backend/API development skills using frameworks such as FastAPI, Flask, or Django, including integration with enterprise data platforms.
  • Intermediate proficiency developing production web applications using modern front-end frameworks such as React.
  • Intermediate proficiency building and integrating backend services and REST APIs using languages such as Python.

What Makes You Stand Out - Preferred
  • 8 or more years of experience owning production web applications end to end in a lead or senior engineering role.
  • Experience building tools, dashboards, or platforms for traders, analysts, or other expert, time-pressured users.
  • Background in commodities, energy, trading, or financial markets.
  • Experience designing information-dense user interfaces and data- or BI-heavy applications, including real-time data or visualization libraries.
  • Experience working with governed data products, semantic layers, or lakehouse APIs.
  • Demonstrated ability to define future-state architectures, lead change, and drive continuous improvement across teams.
