Job description

Find your calling at Mercy! The Lab Support Technician (LST I) is part of the provider care team acting in a support capacity for reports, data and scheduling functions of the laboratory. This position is responsible for providing accurate, timely and effective provision of laboratory support. The LST I will be required to exhibit excellent customer service skills in line with the Mercy Signature Service with all internal and external customer interactions. The LST I is responsible as required for the skillful acquisition of laboratory specimens for testing, utilizing safe, accurate, effective, professional methodologies while observing HIPAA confidentiality requirements and lab policies. The LST I will be responsible for all processing, transport and referral of all types of laboratory specimens and reports as required. In order for the co-worker to achieve the competencies of the LST I position they must be observed by laboratory management or designee and complete all departmental checklists for the LST I position. As a Lab Support Technician I, you'll be an essential member of the care team, ensuring laboratory specimens are collected, processed, transported, and documented accurately and efficiently. This role combines patient interaction, specimen collection, administrative support, and laboratory operations in a fast-paced healthcare environment dedicated to delivering outstanding patient care.

What You'll DoPatient Care & Phlebotomy
  • Skillfully obtain laboratory specimens using safe, accurate, and professional collection techniques.

  • Ensure patient comfort and provide exceptional customer service during specimen collection.

  • Maintain strict compliance with HIPAA regulations and laboratory confidentiality standards.

  • Follow all laboratory policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.

Laboratory Support & Operations
  • Process, label, transport, and refer laboratory specimens according to established procedures.

  • Support laboratory reporting, data entry, and scheduling functions.

  • Ensure timely and accurate handling of specimens and laboratory documentation.

  • Assist in maintaining efficient laboratory workflow and operations.

Customer Service Excellence
  • Provide outstanding service to patients, providers, coworkers, and external customers.

  • Support Mercy Signature Service standards through every interaction.

  • Communicate professionally and effectively with all members of the healthcare team.

Quality & Compliance
  • Maintain accuracy and attention to detail in all aspects of laboratory support.

  • Complete required departmental competencies, training, and checklists.

  • Demonstrate commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement.

Required QualificationsEducation
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Other Requirements
  • Successful completion of the probationary period.

  • No active disciplinary actions or performance improvement plans.

  • Ability to provide excellent customer service and maintain professionalism in all interactions.

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.

Preferred QualificationsEducation
  • College-level coursework in Chemistry, Biology, or other science-related fields.

Experience
