What is a farm support?

Farm Support jobs involve assisting with various tasks on a farm to ensure smooth daily operations. These roles can include feeding and caring for animals, planting and harvesting crops, operating machinery, maintaining equipment, and helping with general farm maintenance. People in farm support positions often work outdoors and may perform physically demanding tasks depending on the season and type of farm. Farm Support workers play a crucial role in helping the farm run efficiently and productively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a farm support?

To thrive as a Farm Support worker, you need practical knowledge of agricultural processes, equipment operation, and basic animal or crop care, typically gained through hands-on experience or vocational training. Familiarity with farm machinery, irrigation systems, and safety protocols is often required, and certifications in pesticide application or machinery operation can be advantageous. Physical stamina, reliability, and effective teamwork are vital soft skills for consistently meeting the demands of farm work. These skills are crucial for maintaining productivity, ensuring safety, and supporting the smooth operation of daily farm activities.

What are some common challenges faced by farm support, and how can they effectively manage them?

Farm Support staff often encounter challenges such as adapting to changing weather conditions, managing time-sensitive tasks during planting or harvest seasons, and coordinating with other team members to ensure smooth operations. Effective communication, staying organized, and being flexible with daily priorities are essential for overcoming these challenges. Many farms also provide training and mentorship, which can help new staff quickly learn best practices and safety protocols. Building strong working relationships within the team is key to efficiently addressing unexpected issues as they arise.

Job description

Organization Overview
Children's Defense Fund (CDF) envisions a nation where marginalized children flourish, leaders prioritize their well-being, and communities wield the power to ensure they thrive. CDF's mission is to build community, so young people grow up with dignity, hope, and joy. CDF core values are Justice, Compassion, Equity, Trust, and Love.
We serve and advocate for the largest, most diverse generation in America: the 74 million children and youth under the age of 18 and 30 million young adults under the age of 25, with particular attention to those living in poverty and communities of color. CDF partners with policymakers, aligned organizations and funders in this service. The Children's Defense Fund is the only national, multi-issue advocacy organization working at the intersection of child well-being and racial justice by wielding the moral authority of programmatic proximity and community organizing to inform public policy.
