Is farm management a stressful job?

Farm management can be stressful due to the physical demands, long hours, and responsibility for crop and livestock outcomes. Managers must handle unpredictable weather, market fluctuations, and equipment issues, which can contribute to job stress. Strong organizational skills and problem-solving abilities help mitigate some of these pressures.

How do I become a farm manager?

To become a farm manager, individuals typically gain experience through working on farms or in agricultural roles, often starting as farm workers or assistants. Many farm managers have a background in agriculture, horticulture, or related fields, and some pursue degrees or certifications in farm management or agricultural sciences. Strong leadership, organizational skills, and knowledge of farming operations are essential for success in this role.

What does a farm manager do?

A Farm Manager oversees the daily operations of a farm, ensuring that crops or livestock are produced efficiently and profitably. Their responsibilities include planning planting and harvesting schedules, managing staff, maintaining equipment, and monitoring budgets. They also ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations, as well as implementing new technologies or methods to improve productivity. Successful Farm Managers must have strong organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a farm manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Farm Manager, you need expertise in agricultural science, crop or livestock management, and business operations, often supported by a degree in agriculture or related experience. Familiarity with farm management software, machinery operation, and compliance with safety and environmental regulations is essential. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help in managing teams and adapting to changing conditions. These skills ensure efficient farm operations, maximize productivity, and support sustainable agricultural practices.

What is the difference between Farm Manager vs Agricultural Technician?

AspectFarm ManagerAgricultural Technician
CredentialsExperience in farming, possibly a degree in agriculture or related fieldDegree or certification in agriculture, agronomy, or related field
Work EnvironmentOversees farm operations, manages staff, and plans crop/livestock activitiesConducts field inspections, experiments, and assists with crop or soil analysis
Employer & Industry UsageFarms, agricultural companies, cooperativesResearch institutions, government agencies, agricultural service providers

While both roles involve agriculture, a Farm Manager oversees overall farm operations and staff, focusing on management and planning. An Agricultural Technician supports fieldwork, conducts research, and assists with technical tasks. The roles complement each other but differ in scope and responsibilities.

How does a farm manager typically balance hands-on fieldwork with administrative responsibilities?

Farm Managers often juggle both practical and managerial duties. In a typical week, you may spend mornings supervising planting or harvesting activities alongside workers, while afternoons are dedicated to planning crop rotations, managing budgets, and coordinating with suppliers. Effective time management and delegation are crucial, as the role requires you to stay informed about both the operational and business sides of the farm. Balancing these responsibilities ensures smooth operations and supports long-term farm profitability.

Core Values & What "Great" Looks Like
We're looking for candidates who are self-starters-people who take initiative, want to grow professionally, and are willing to continuously reflect on their performance and how they show up for customers.
The ideal team member is committed to the fundamentals of strong insurance conversations, including:
  • Conducting tailored, needs-based discussions rather than simply following scripts
  • Listening to understand individual circumstances and priorities
  • Explaining coverage options clearly and recommending solutions that fit each customer
This role also benefits from confidence in discussing liability and asset protection needs, along with a foundational understanding of financial planning and protection for families and their futures. You don't need to know everything on day one-but you should be willing to learn, improve, and consistently work toward mastery.
Compensation
This role starts with a $55,000 base salary, along with commission/bonus opportunities. When executed at a high level-focusing on customer needs and achieving agency expectations-earnings are expected to reach $65,000+, with potential for significantly more based on the depth of customer conversations and your effort.
Training & Support
You'll receive ongoing training and coaching from experienced leaders in the industry. We invest in helping you master the fundamentals-how to conduct great insurance conversations, build trust through needs-based recommendations, and deliver consistent service excellence. You'll have clear guidance, practical tools, and support to help you grow with confidence.
Atmosphere & Work Environment
Our agency is built around a professional, people-first culture-focused on high standards, teamwork, and meaningful client service. You'll work in a clean, well-appointed office environment designed for success, including:
  • An individual office available for the new hire
  • A dedicated, high-end conference room for customer insurance and financial reviews

We also have the capacity to support your role with effective marketing and advertising, so you can focus on serving customers, converting opportunities, and building long-term relationships.
Compensation: $65,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
