Fall Protection information

What is fall protection?

Fall protection refers to a set of safety measures, equipment, and procedures designed to prevent workers from falling from heights or to minimize the risk of injury if a fall occurs. It includes the use of guardrails, safety nets, personal fall arrest systems, and proper training to ensure worker safety. Fall protection is essential in industries like construction, maintenance, and warehousing, where employees frequently work at elevated locations. Employers are required by law to provide appropriate fall protection and training to their employees.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fall protection specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fall Protection Specialist, you need a strong understanding of safety regulations, hazard assessment, and proper use of fall protection equipment, typically supported by OSHA or related safety certifications. Familiarity with safety management systems, inspection tools, and training platforms like OSHA 1910/1926 standards is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure workplace safety, regulatory compliance, and the prevention of fall-related incidents.

What are common challenges faced by fall protection specialists on construction sites, and how are they typically addressed?

Fall Protection Specialists often encounter challenges such as ensuring consistent compliance with safety protocols among diverse crews, adapting fall protection systems to unique or changing site conditions, and identifying potential hazards in evolving work environments. These challenges are typically addressed through frequent on-site training sessions, conducting regular safety audits, close collaboration with site supervisors, and staying up-to-date with OSHA regulations. Open communication and proactive problem-solving are essential for creating a culture where safety is prioritized and everyone feels responsible for fall prevention.

Job description

The Environmental Health and Safety Compliance (EHS) Analyst bridges the gap between research and operations, serving as a technical lead for the chemical inventory program and executing annual regulatory compliance requirements across university infrastructure. The Analyst manages inventory reconciliation and verifies safety conditions, prioritizing operational facilities (non-research spaces such as mechanical rooms, workshops, boiler plants, etc.) while providing secondary compliance oversight in assigned laboratories. Operating as a flexible technical resource, the Analyst validates inventory data completeness, implementation of high-hazard operational programs (e.g., fall protection, energy control, cranes, asbestos management, etc.), and partners with team members to verify corrective actions and close the loop on safety deficiencies. This position will report to the Director, Occupational Environmental Health, and Safety (OEHS).

Essential Functions:

Leads the physical execution and data management of the university's chemical inventory program, reconciling physical stock against digital records to ensure regulatory reporting accuracy.

Helps implement and ensure high-risk operational safety program compliance (including asbestos surveillance, fall protection systems, energy control, crane/hoist regulations, etc.) by managing the facility audit schedule, executing technical field inspections, and delivering targeted safety training to operational personnel.

Provides technical field support for industrial hygiene investigations (indoor air quality, noise dosimetry, respirator fit testing, incident reports) and serves as an active member of the hazardous materials emergency response team.

Partners with other department staff during high-volume inspection cycles assist with data collection, chemical inventory finalization, and administrative recordkeeping. Conduct post-inspection field visits to physically confirm that corrective actions have been successfully implemented and documented.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
