At Colonial Pipeline, we move more than 100 million gallons of fuel every day, delivering 45% of all fuel consumed on the East Coast. Our teams help keep energy flowing safely and reliably to more than 50 million Americans. As an Electrical Engineering CoOp, you'll help support the systems that make this possible.

As an Electrical Engineering CoOp, you'll apply classroom learning to real-world power systems that support our large-scale pipeline operations. Across multiple rotations, you'll gain increasing responsibility, field exposure, and opportunities to work on live, mission-critical engineering challenges.

About Electrical Engineering

Electrical Engineering at Colonial Pipeline plays a vital role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of our pipeline systems. Our Electrical Engineers design, maintain, and improve the power distribution and protection systems that keep critical equipment running across a vast, 24/7 operational network. The team oversees the performance of digital power metering, protection relays, and motor control technologies that detect abnormal conditions, interrupt power when necessary, and enhance system responsiveness. Their work helps safeguard infrastructure, enhance operational continuity, and ensure energy delivery to millions of Americans.

What You'll Do

You'll work alongside experienced electrical engineers who design, test, and troubleshoot power distribution and protection systems that keep operations running 24/7/365. Your experience may include:

  • Understanding pipeline system layout, equipment, and operational procedures
  • Learning industry-standard electrical engineering tools used for power distribution and protection
  • Reviewing and interpreting one-line diagrams, wiring schematics, loop drawings, and P&IDs
  • Participating in site walkdowns to gather project information and support design changes
  • Supporting basic troubleshooting exercises, including simulated protection scenarios.
  • Assisting with small-scale power system improvements under mentorship
  • Gaining hands-on experience with arc flash hazard analysis, relay coordination studies, and motor protection programming
  • Building and testing a replica motor protection system in a lab environment
  • Collaborating with engineers to analyze power system issues and evaluate solutions
  • Supporting commissioning activities at pipeline facilities
  • Presenting an end-of-term summary to supervisors and engineering stakeholders
  • Participate in a project commissioning at a pipeline facility to implement the planned power system changes under the guidance of a mentor.
  • Finalize and present an end-of-term summary to supervisors and stakeholders.
  • Receive and give feedback to/from mentors and supervisors on co-op experience and areas for improvement.

What You Bring:

  • Pursuing a degree in Electrical, Controls, Computer, or related Engineering discipline
  • Coursework or experience in power systems, circuits, or electromagnetics
  • Interest in a career in Electrical Engineering
  • Strong technical aptitude and a hands-on mindset
  • Ability to learn and apply complex technical concepts
  • Strong communication, attention to detail, and task organization
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Willingness to travel occasionally
