Job description

Role: UI/UX DESIGNER

Location: Austin, TX - Position will be 2 days remote with 3days (Mon, Tues & Thurs) required to be ONSITE at the location listed above.

Program will only allow candidates who are LOCAL TO THE AUSTIN AREA ONLY (Within 50-mile radius).

DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES 

Understands business objectives and problems, identifies alternative solutions, performs studies and cost/benefit analysis of alternatives. Analyzes user requirements, procedures, and problems to automate processing or to improve existing computer system: Confers with personnel of organizational units involved to analyze current operational procedures, identify problems, and learn specific input and output requirements, such as forms of data input, how data is to be; summarized, and formats for reports. Writes detailed description of user needs, program functions, and steps required to develop or modify computer program. Reviews computer system capabilities, specifications, and scheduling limitations to determine if requested program or program change is possible within existing system.

 

The role of UI/UX designers is central to improving accessibility, usability, and responsiveness of the Client eligibility systems.

 

 Key responsibilities include:

• Lead user research initiatives and journey mapping to gain deep insights into user interactions and identify opportunities for optimization.

• Proven UX Design Experience: Extensive portfolio demonstrating expertise in user research, information architecture, wireframing, prototyping (low and high-fidelity), and usability testing.

• Develop wireframes, prototypes, and visual hierarchies in accordance with established accessibility guidelines and branding standards.

• Collaborate with Code for America and cross-functional teams to apply industry best practices in UI/UX design.

• Engage in discovery workshops, feedback sessions, and sprint planning to ensure that design decisions are aligned with business objectives.

• Employ a comprehensive suite of tools—including Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, and Hotjar—and implement usability testing, responsive design, and SEO optimization strategies.

• Experience with AI/ML Interfaces: Demonstrated experience designing user interfaces for systems that incorporate Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning, with a focus on explainable AI (XAI) and human-AI interaction principles.

• Complex System Design: Ability to understand and design for complex business logic and regulatory requirements, particularly in domains like government services, healthcare, or finance.

• Data Visualization: Skill in presenting complex data and AI insights in a clear, concise, and understandable visual format.

• Empathy and User Advocacy: Deep commitment to understanding user needs and advocating for user-centered design principles.

• Collaboration & Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and present design solutions to stakeholders.

• Understanding of Accessibility Standards: Knowledge of WCAG and other accessibility guidelines to ensure inclusive design.

• Bonus: Experience with eligibility determination systems or similar rule-based, data-intensive applications.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • 11 Required Hands-on experience designing user interfaces and experiences for enterprise systems, including wireframes, prototypes, and visual hierarchies using tools like Figma, Adobe XD, and Sketch.
  • 11 Required Demonstrated ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical teams, translating business needs into intuitive design solutions that align with accessibility and branding standards.
  • 10 Required Experience applying UX design principles such as hierarchy, contrast, and alignment to create responsive and accessible web and mobile interfaces.
  • 10 Required Experience creating wireframes and prototypes that support agile development cycles, including sketch-to-visual fidelity transitions.

 

Nice to Have: 

  • 5 Preferred Experience designing graphical diagrams and visual narratives to communicate timelines, workflows, and system architecture.
  • 3 Preferred Demonstrated ability to facilitate design workshops and feedback sessions with stakeholders, ensuring alignment with business goals and user needs.
  • 3 Preferred Bachelor's degree in graphic design, Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science, or related field. Equivalent experience may be substituted.
  • 3 Preferred Strong multitasking skills with the ability to manage multiple design streams across concurrent work effort.
