What does a falconer do?

A falconer is responsible for training, caring for, and handling birds of prey, such as falcons, hawks, and eagles. Their duties include feeding, maintaining health, exercising the birds, and using them for hunting or bird control. Falconers may work in conservation, education, pest control, or sport hunting. Becoming a falconer requires extensive training, permits, and knowledge of bird behavior.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Falconry position, and why are they important?

To thrive in falconry, you need a solid understanding of raptor biology, avian behavior, and practical bird handling skills, often gained through apprenticeships or certification courses. Familiarity with specialized falconry equipment such as hoods, jesses, and telemetry systems is important, and some regions require a legal license or permit to practice. Patience, keen observational abilities, and strong problem-solving skills are invaluable, as is effective communication with clients or team members. These competencies ensure the welfare of the birds, compliance with regulations, and success in both educational or conservation-focused programs.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a falconer working in a professional setting?

Falconers are responsible for the daily care and training of birds of prey, which includes feeding, health monitoring, and maintaining aviaries. Their work often involves flying and exercising the birds, cleaning equipment, and keeping detailed records of each bird's behavior and condition. In addition to hands-on bird management, falconers may conduct educational demonstrations, assist with pest control operations, or support conservation initiatives. Collaboration with veterinarians and other wildlife professionals is common, making strong teamwork and communication skills essential for success in this unique field.
