Machining Operations Supervisor


The Supervisor (Machine Shop) is responsible for overseeing daily operations within a machine shop environment to ensure efficient production and high-quality output. This role involves managing a team of machinists and technicians, coordinating workflow, and maintaining adherence to safety and quality standards. The supervisor will play a critical role in scheduling, training, and mentoring staff to optimize productivity and foster a collaborative work environment. Additionally, the position requires close collaboration with engineering, maintenance, and quality assurance teams to troubleshoot issues and implement continuous improvement initiatives. Ultimately, the Supervisor ensures that all machining processes meet company standards and customer specifications while maintaining a safe and organized workplace.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise machine shop operations to support production schedules, operational goals, and customer requirements.
  • Direct and coordinate the activities of machine shop employees to ensure efficient workflow, productivity, and quality output.
  • Monitor staffing levels, production flow, machine utilization, and operational performance throughout the shift.
  • Ensure compliance with all company safety procedures, quality standards, housekeeping requirements, and operational policies.
  • Promote a safe work environment by identifying hazards, enforcing safety expectations, and addressing unsafe behaviors or conditions.
  • Coordinate production priorities and communicate operational expectations to Leads, Operators, and support personnel.
  • Monitor machine performance and coordinate with maintenance personnel to address equipment concerns and minimize downtime.
  • Work closely with quality personnel to ensure products meet dimensional, visual, and customer specifications.
  • Assist in troubleshooting machining issues involving tooling, setup, machine operation, dimensional variation, or process instability.
  • Support setup activities and verify employees are following setup sheets, work instructions, inspection methods, and standardized operating procedures.
  • Train, coach, and develop employees on operational procedures, safety practices, quality expectations, and performance standards.
  • Address employee performance concerns, attendance issues, operational deficiencies, and behavioral concerns in accordance with company policy and leadership direction.
  • Support employee accountability through clear communication, consistent expectations, documentation, and follow-up.
  • Collaborate with engineering, maintenance, quality, and operations management to improve operational efficiency, reduce scrap, and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Accurately complete production reports, shift documentation, attendance records, incident documentation, and operational communication logs as required.
  • Conduct shift startup meetings, communicate production priorities, and provide operational updates to incoming or outgoing shifts as needed.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas in accordance with company standards and operational expectations.


Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of manufacturing or machine shop experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory or leadership experience in a manufacturing environment required.
  • Working knowledge of CNC machining operations and machining processes required.
  • Experience with CNC turning centers and Fanuc controls preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, setup sheets, work instructions, inspection documentation, and production schedules preferred.
  • Experience using precision measuring instruments including micrometers, calipers, indicators, and gauges preferred.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, troubleshooting, and decision-making skills required.
  • Ability to manage employee performance, prioritize tasks, and adapt within a fast-paced manufacturing environment required.
  • Basic computer proficiency required.
  • Ability to work independently and maintain operational accountability during off-shift operations required.
