What is an FAA attorney?

An FAA Attorney is a lawyer who works for or with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), focusing on legal matters related to aviation safety, regulations, and enforcement. They provide legal guidance on aviation policies, ensure compliance with federal laws, and may represent the FAA in administrative or judicial proceedings. Their work can involve regulatory compliance, enforcement actions, airport and airspace issues, and aviation safety oversight.

What types of projects and cases does an FAA attorney typically handle in their day-to-day work?

FAA Attorneys often work on projects involving regulatory enforcement, policy development, contract review, and providing legal advice on matters related to aviation safety and compliance. Their daily activities may include drafting legal opinions, interpreting federal regulations, representing the agency in administrative hearings, and collaborating with technical experts, policymakers, and other government attorneys. This role frequently requires the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, while also staying up to date with evolving aviation laws and industry standards. Teamwork and cross-departmental communication are key, as FAA Attorneys regularly work with professionals from engineering, safety, and operational backgrounds to achieve agency objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the FAA attorney position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an FAA Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, active bar membership, and in-depth knowledge of aviation law, administrative law, and regulatory compliance. Familiarity with legal research databases, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, and government case management systems is crucial. Excellent analytical thinking, written and verbal communication, and negotiation skills help an attorney succeed in this collaborative and often complex environment. These skills are vital to ensure the FAA's legal interests are protected, regulatory compliance is maintained, and effective guidance is provided on policy and enforcement issues.

Does the FAA pay well?

FAA attorneys typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, location, and level of responsibility. Entry-level positions may start at a lower range, but experienced attorneys or those in senior roles can earn higher compensation, often supplemented with benefits and job stability associated with federal employment.
