What is an extruder?

As an extruder, you operate specialized machinery used in the manufacture of thermoplastic materials, used in turn for purposes like car and plane manufacture. Your duties include mixing materials, inputting settings, and ensuring a safe and successful extrusion process. You also perform routine maintenance on equipment, and report any mechanical degradation or breakage, especially where it may affect safe operation. A career as an extruder does not require you have formal qualifications or a college degree, but you should have a high school diploma or GED certificate, mechanical aptitude, and a strong eye for detail. Skills and experience gained at a trade school or vocational program will set you ahead of other candidates and help you gather professional contacts.

What does an extruder do?

An extruder operates machines that shape materials such as plastic, metal, or food by forcing them through a shaped die to create products of a specific size and shape. Their responsibilities include setting up, monitoring, and adjusting the extruding machines to ensure quality and efficiency. Extruders also inspect finished products, perform routine maintenance, and troubleshoot any issues that arise during the process. This role is commonly found in manufacturing industries, especially in plastics and food production.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an extruder, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Extruder, you need mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a high school diploma or equivalent, often with experience in manufacturing or plastics processing. Familiarity with extrusion machinery, quality control systems, and safety protocols is typically required, and some employers may prefer certifications in industrial operations. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication help you adapt to production changes and maintain high standards. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring efficient, safe, and high-quality output in extrusion manufacturing environments.

What are some common challenges faced by extruders in a manufacturing setting, and how can they be addressed?

Extruders often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistent product quality, troubleshooting machine malfunctions, and managing raw material variations. To address these issues, it's important to closely monitor process parameters, perform regular equipment maintenance, and communicate frequently with quality control and maintenance teams. Developing strong problem-solving skills and staying up-to-date with standard operating procedures can also help extruders overcome these challenges efficiently.

Both extruders and molders work in manufacturing environments and often require similar certifications. While extruders shape materials by forcing them through dies, molders form objects by pouring or pressing materials into molds. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job role within manufacturing industries.

Job description

Are you ready to power your career with an industry leader?ย At Advanced Digital Cable, weย donโ€™tย just keep up with the competitionโ€”we set the pace. As a premier manufacturer of wire and cable, we provide the literal "nervous system" for modern infrastructure, and we do it better than anyone else.ย Weย utilizeย the most advanced manufacturing technology and equipment available, ensuring you work in a high-tech, high-quality setting.ย We manufacture 100% of our products across fourย state-of-the-artย U.S. locations. We are constantly expanding our capacity and developing new products, which means more opportunities for our team to grow and advance.ย

Jobย Summary:ย

We are looking for a detail-orientedย Extruderย Assistantย to join our manufacturing team. If you enjoy working with your hands,ย operatingย high-tech machinery, and ensuring products are built to perfect specifications, this is the role for you.ย Extruderย is the process of shapingย materialย  byย forcing it through a machine to create a continuous shapeโ€”in our case, the protective "jacket" or coating that goes around wires and cables.ย As an Extruderย Assistant, you will support the Lead Operator in running a high-speed production line that transforms raw materials into finished industrial cables.ย ย

Key Duties and Responsibilities:ย

  • Machine Coordination:ย Youโ€™llย manage "Take-Up" machinesโ€”large motorizedย reels that neatly wind the finished cable as it comes off the lineโ€”ensuring the tension isย perfectย and the product is ready for shipping.ย

  • Precision Testing: Using specialized tools like calipers (digital measuring devices), you will verify that the cable walls are the exact thicknessย requiredย for safety and performance.ย

  • Digital Branding: You will program inkjet systems to print vital safety codes and branding directly onto the cable jacket.ย

  • Quality Verification:ย Ensure that every foot of cableย createdย is built to exact specifications, labeled correctly, and packaged securely.ย

Required Qualifications:ย

  • Operational Excellence:ย Proven ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment while meeting strict productivity standards. You should be comfortable adapting to changing production needs while keeping a clean, organized workspace.ย

  • Reliability:ย A track recordย of consistent attendance and punctuality. We value team members who take fullย ownershipย of their actions and follow all safety and operational procedures.ย

  • Clear Communication:ย Ability to follow complex directions, seek clarification when needed, andย maintainย legible,ย accurateย production records (Labels & Travelers).ย

  • Coachability:ย Responsive to management direction and willing to take full responsibility for personal actions and performance.ย

  • Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs.ย

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and climb for extended periods.ย

  • Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, dust, machinery, and varying temperatures.ย

Compensation & Benefits:

Starting Pay: $20.00 per hour (Plus $2.50 for 2nd shift)

We offer a competitive salary based on experience along with a comprehensive benefits package, including:

  • Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance
  • Health Savings Account (HSA)
  • Life Insurance
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Long- and Short-Term Disability
  • Accident & Critical Illness Insurance
  • Paid Time Off (PTO)
  • 11 Paid Holidays
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Career development and advancement opportunities

Shift Opportunities:ย

  • Second Shift: 3:00pm - 11:00pm, Mon-Fri (+$2.50)
