What is an external life insurance wholesaler?

An External Life Insurance Wholesaler is a professional who works for an insurance company or brokerage and is responsible for promoting and selling life insurance products to financial advisors, independent agents, and brokers. They typically operate in the field (outside the office), building relationships, providing product education, and supporting the sales process. Their main goal is to drive sales by helping advisors understand the benefits and features of various life insurance products, supporting them with marketing materials, and answering technical questions. External wholesalers are distinct from internal wholesalers, who usually work from the company’s office and offer support over the phone or online.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an external life insurance wholesaler?

To thrive as an External Life Insurance Wholesaler, you need in-depth knowledge of life insurance products, strong sales acumen, and typically a bachelor's degree or relevant industry certifications such as FINRA Series 6/63 or state insurance licenses. Familiarity with CRM software, financial planning tools, and sales tracking systems is commonly required. Exceptional interpersonal skills, persuasive communication, and the ability to build and maintain client relationships are crucial soft skills for success. These competencies are vital for effectively driving sales, managing a portfolio of advisors or clients, and meeting organizational targets in a competitive financial marketplace.

How does an external life insurance wholesaler typically collaborate with internal teams and financial advisors to drive sales?

An External Life Insurance Wholesaler works closely with internal sales support teams and marketing departments to develop effective sales strategies and materials. They also build strong relationships with financial advisors and brokers, providing product expertise, training, and guidance to help them best serve their clients. Frequent travel and regular communication are essential, as wholesalers often conduct in-person meetings, webinars, and presentations to educate and motivate advisors. This collaborative approach ensures that everyone is aligned and equipped to achieve sales targets and deliver optimal solutions to end clients.
