Job description

Description

The Library Summer Intern supports daily library operations with a focus on customer service; the promotion of reading, nutrition, and fitness; and circulation. Under the guidance of library staff, the interns will assist with checking in materials, shelving books, answering patron questions, and helping with library programs and events. Interns will also help support the city's Summer Lunch program by assisting with setup, kit distribution, craft/game activities, and cleanup at the Main Library and City Parks. This is a seasonal position designed to provide hands-on experience in a public library setting, ideal for individuals exploring careers in libraries or related fields. Library interns will be assigned to one of the Moreno Valley library locations and support library outreach at Celebration Park, Shadow Mountain Park, or Lasselle Sports Park.


Work Hours: Monday - Friday (10 AM - 2 PM)

Hour per week: 20

Work Location: Moreno Valley - Main

Job Status: Internship start date will commence in June 2026 following successful completion of a standard background check and end on August 31, 2026. 

Benefits Eligibility: This position is not eligible for benefits.

Hourly Pay Rate: $16.90


Primary Responsibilities

An individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.

  • Provide friendly and responsive customer service, including welcoming and registering patrons, issuing library cards, and managing patron accounts
  • Assist patrons with locating materials, using public computers, printing, copying, and accessing library services
  • Check in library materials; process returns and ensure items are properly handled
  • Accept and process payments for fines, fees, or other library services at a library service kiosk
  • Share information with patrons regarding library programs, events, room reservations, and community resources
  • Assist with shelving and organizing library materials to maintain a tidy and accessible collection
  • Support the Summer Lunch Program by helping with meal setup, kit distribution, craft/game activities, and cleanup
  • Monitor patron conduct and escalate concerns to appropriate staff as needed to ensure a safe and respectful environment
  • Follow all policies and procedures related to patron privacy and handling of confidential information
  • Perform other duties as assigned by library staff or supervisors

Requirements

An individual should possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed and meet the amount of education, training, and/of work experience required:

  • Must be at least 17 years of age
  • Must be an incoming high school senior or older
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from the library
  • Excellent customer service skills and a friendly, approachable attitude
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to move from place to place within the location; lifting of items weighing up to (25) pounds and occasional up to      50 pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials with a buddy system.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
