How much do exploration geophysicist jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 15, 2026, the average yearly pay for exploration geophysicist in Texas is $88,890.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $65,200.00 and $104,300.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Exploration Geophysicist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Exploration Geophysicist, you need a strong background in geology, physics, mathematics, and geophysical data interpretation, typically supported by a relevant degree such as geophysics or earth sciences. Proficiency with industry-standard software like Petrel, Kingdom, and seismic data processing tools, as well as familiarity with GIS systems, is essential. Strong analytical thinking, teamwork, and effective communication skills help in collaborating on multidisciplinary projects and conveying technical findings. These skills and qualities are vital for accurately identifying subsurface resources and contributing to successful exploration efforts.

What are exploration geophysicists?

Exploration geophysicists are scientists who use physical methods to study the Earth's subsurface, primarily to locate natural resources such as oil, gas, minerals, or groundwater. They collect and analyze data from seismic, magnetic, gravitational, electrical, and electromagnetic surveys to create maps and models of what lies beneath the surface. Their work is vital in the energy, mining, and environmental industries, guiding drilling and excavation decisions while minimizing environmental impact.

How does an Exploration Geophysicist typically collaborate with geologists and engineers during a project?

Exploration Geophysicists work closely with geologists and engineers throughout the lifecycle of a project. They interpret geophysical data to identify subsurface structures, then share their findings with geologists to validate geological models. Engineers rely on these insights to assess extraction feasibility and plan drilling operations. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as regular meetings and data-sharing ensure that all disciplines are aligned, leading to more accurate resource estimation and successful project outcomes.

What is the difference between Exploration Geophysicist vs Geoscientist?

AspectExploration GeophysicistGeoscientist
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Geophysics, Geology, or related field; certifications varyBachelor's or higher in Geology, Geophysics, or Earth Sciences; certifications optional
Work EnvironmentField surveys, seismic data analysis, exploration sitesLaboratories, field sites, research institutions
Industry UsageOil & gas, mineral exploration, energy companiesEnvironmental consulting, research, academia

Exploration Geophysicists focus on locating natural resources through seismic and geophysical methods, often working in exploration environments. Geoscientists have broader roles in studying Earth's processes, often in research or environmental contexts. Both roles require strong geoscience backgrounds but differ in focus and work settings.

Job description

Viridien (www.viridiengroup.com) is an advanced technology, digital and Earth data company that pushes the boundaries of science for a more prosperous and sustainable future. With our ingenuity, drive and deep curiosity we discover new insights, innovations, and solutions that efficiently and responsibly resolve complex natural resource, digital, energy transition and infrastructure challenges.

Job Details:

Viridien is transforming how the world understands the subsurface for minerals and the energy transition. Within our Earth Data department, we are seeking a Senior Exploration Geophysicist to lead mineral exploration projects from concept through delivery. In this role, you will apply an integrated geophysical toolkit, including gravity, magnetics, EM/MT, and seismic where applicable, to build subsurface models, generate exploration targets, and support critical client decisions.

About the Team:

You will be part of a globally connected, technically focused Earth Data team working at the intersection of minerals exploration and advanced integrated geophysics. The team collaborates closely with geologists, data scientists, and commercial stakeholders to deliver high-impact solutions that support critical minerals discovery and the broader energy transition.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead integrated geophysical interpretation and quantitative analysis for mineral exploration, including:

    • Gravity and magnetics (airborne and ground; regional to prospect scale)

    • EM and MT (airborne EM, CSEM, ground EM, AMT/MT)

    • Seismic methods in hard rock or basin-hosted settings where applicable

    • Integration with geological, structural, geochemical, and drilling data

  • Own the full technical lifecycle of projects, including:

    • Requirements gathering and survey design input

    • Data QC and processing oversight

    • Interpretation, integration, and final recommendations

  • Plan and execute advanced geophysical workflows:

    • 2D/3D gravity and magnetic modeling and inversion

    • 1D/2D/3D EM and MT inversion and interpretation

    • Integrated Earth model development for structure, alteration, fluids, and mineral systems

  • Drive targeted R&D improvements within projects, including:

    • Testing new inversion strategies and constraints

    • Enhancing integrated interpretation workflows

    • Developing tools/scripts to improve automation, QC, and data integration

  • Translate complex geophysical results into clear, actionable insights for internal teams and clients

  • Collaborate with geologists, petrophysicists, and data scientists to align geophysical outcomes with mineral system models and business objectives

  • Provide technical support to the Sales team on geophysical matters

  • Mentor junior staff on best practices, integrated interpretation, and problem-solving

Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Geophysics, Geoscience, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or related field (PhD or MS with strong experience)

  • 7+ years of applied geophysics experience, preferably in mineral exploration or hard rock environments

  • Strong hands-on experience in several of the following:

    • Gravity and magnetic data processing, modeling, and 2D/3D inversion

    • EM and MT processing, inversion, and integration

    • Joint or cooperative interpretation across potential fields, EM/MT, and seismic

    • Seismic methods for crustal imaging and structural mapping

    • Integrated subsurface characterization and drill target generation

  • Experience with commercial and/or in-house inversion and modeling software, with the ability to evaluate underlying assumptions

  • Proficiency in scripting/programming (Python preferred; MATLAB, C++, or Julia a plus)

  • Demonstrated ability to develop or improve workflows that enhance project quality and efficiency

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present complex technical concepts clearly

  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and make decisions in dynamic environments
