Experimental Design information

What is an experimental design?

An Experimental Design job involves planning, structuring, and analyzing experiments to ensure reliable and valid results. Professionals in this role use statistical methods to test hypotheses, optimize processes, and improve decision-making in fields such as science, engineering, and business. They design experiments to minimize bias, control variables, and maximize the accuracy of conclusions. This role is crucial in research and development, product testing, and process optimization across various industries.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in experimental design roles?

One common challenge in Experimental Design roles is ensuring that experiments are both scientifically rigorous and feasible given constraints like budget, time, or available resources. Additionally, dealing with unexpected variables or data inconsistencies can require creative problem-solving and the ability to adapt research protocols. Team collaboration is also key, as experimental designers often work closely with scientists, engineers, and statisticians to develop and refine testing procedures. By anticipating potential obstacles and communicating clearly with stakeholders, professionals in this role contribute to successful and reliable research outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the experimental design position, and why are they important?

To excel in Experimental Design, a professional needs a strong background in statistics, scientific methodology, and data analysis, typically supported by an advanced degree in a related field. Familiarity with statistical software (such as R, SPSS, or SAS), laboratory equipment, and protocol management systems is often required. Strong attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this position. These capabilities are vital for ensuring research integrity, reproducibility, and clear reporting of experimental outcomes.

What do you do in experimental design?

In experimental design, a professional plans and structures experiments to test hypotheses, ensuring variables are controlled and data collection methods are appropriate. This involves selecting suitable sample sizes, randomization, and statistical analysis to produce valid and reliable results.

Job description

About Us:

At AMETEK, we don't just manufacture market-leading electronic instruments and electromechanical devices - we are using innovation to make the world a better place; technology to improve lives; and talent to solve challenges that matter.

Job Summary:

The Mechanical Design & Validation Engineer is responsible for the design, development, testing, and validation of sensor products used in gas and steam turbine environments, with a focus on thermocouples, RTDs, and cable assemblies.

This role combines mechanical design with hands-on experimentation, prototype development, and environmental validation, ensuring products perform reliably under extreme conditions.  The engineer will partner across engineering, manufacturing, and commercial teams to bring robust products from concept through release.

Key Responsibilities:

DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT

  • Develop product designs and specifications in cross-functional team settings.
  • Design and model components using SolidWorks and CAD tools
  • Create drawings, bills of material, and engineering documentation
  • Perform component selection and support reverse engineering efforts

TESTING, EXPERIMENTATION & VALIDATION

  • Design and execute test plans, experiments, and validation protocols for new and existing products
  • Build and instrument prototypes to evaluate design concepts and performance limits
  • Use lab equipment (environmental chambers, vibration systems, thermal cycling, etc.) to simulate real-world operating conditions
  • Analyze test data to identify root causes, failure modes, and design improvements
  • Drive iterative design-test-learn cycles to improve product performance and reliability
  • Develop and document qualification test methods, acceptance criteria, and reports

ANALYSIS & PROBELM SOLVING

  • Perform failure analysis and troubleshoot issues using structured methodologies (e.g. root cause analysis, design of experiments where applicable)
  • Evaluate designs against environmental stresses including temperature, vibration, pressure/flow (steam, drag), and chemical exposure
  • Partner in design reviews to ensure robustness and manufacturability

PRODUCT RELEASE & CROSS-FUNCTIONAL SUPPORT

  • Support prototype builds, pilot production, and transition to manufacturing
  • Collaborate with manufacturing to resolve production challenges and improve product yield
  • Work with sales/customers to ensure products meet environmental and application requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME), Mechanical Engineering Technology (BSMET), or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 5+ years experience in mechanical design, product development, and testing/validation
  • Hands-on experience building and testing prototypes
  • Hands-on experience designing and executing physical testing or validation plans, not solely simulation or design work

Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong background in experimental design, testing, and data-driven problem solving
  • Experience writing qualification and validation test plans
  • Familiarity with design of experiments (DOE), failure analysis, and reliable testing
  • Knowledge of strength of materials, stress analysis, and thermal/mechanical systems
  • Proficiency with CAD tools (SolidWorks, AutoCAD)
  • Experience working in high-temperature or harsh environment applications (strong plus)
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to use AI tools to improve productivity, decision-making, work quality, and to reduce costs. The successful candidate must be able to identify appropriate AI use cases and critically evaluate AI-generated outputs.

What's in It for You:

  • Competitive compensation, holiday pay, and paid time off
  • Great benefits package that includes health, vision, and dental insurance
  • 401(k), plus matching
  • Flexible spending accounts (FSAs), health savings account (HSA) with AMETEK contribution, life insurance, disability insurance, and family medical leave
  • Employee referral program
  • Tuition reimbursement program
  • Employee assistance program
  • Exciting, fast-paced environment where you could make a true impact
  • Opportunities for career advancement within our business unit and across all other AMETEK business entities
