As of Aug 21, 2026, the average hourly pay for experimental biology in the United States is $26.92, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.03 and $39.66 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is experimental biology?

Experimental biology is a branch of science that involves conducting laboratory or field experiments to understand biological processes and principles. Researchers in this field design and perform experiments to test hypotheses about living organisms, cells, genes, or ecosystems. The goal is to gain new knowledge about how living systems function, adapt, and interact with their environments. Experimental biologists work in areas such as genetics, physiology, ecology, and molecular biology, often using advanced tools and technologies to collect and analyze data.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an experimental biologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Experimental Biologist, you need a solid background in biology, laboratory techniques, and data analysis, typically supported by a relevant degree such as a BSc or MSc in biology or related fields. Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation, statistical analysis software (like R or Python), and adherence to safety and regulatory standards is essential. Critical thinking, problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for designing experiments and collaborating with research teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for producing reliable scientific results, advancing research goals, and ensuring safe, ethical laboratory practices.

What are some of the main challenges faced by experimental biologists when conducting laboratory research?

Experimental biologists often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex experimental protocols, managing variability in biological samples, and ensuring reproducibility of results. They must also stay up to date with rapidly evolving laboratory techniques and technologies, which can require ongoing training. Additionally, effective communication and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams is crucial, as projects often involve input from biochemists, data analysts, and other specialists.

What is the difference between Experimental Biology vs Biological Technician?

Experimental Biology involves designing and conducting experiments to understand biological processes, often requiring advanced degrees. Biological Technicians support research by performing experiments, maintaining lab equipment, and collecting data, typically with an associate's or bachelor's degree. While both roles work in research environments, Experimental Biology professionals often lead research projects, whereas Biological Technicians assist in day-to-day lab tasks.

This worldwide representation enriches our perspectives and enhances our creative approach to solving complex scientific challenges.

We strive to be leaders not only in biomedical research but also in creating an environment where excellence thrives through collaboration across cultures and backgrounds. Our mission is to advance the biomedical sciences by cultivating the next generation of scientific leaders, providing meaningful opportunities for researchers of all backgrounds to learn, innovate, and make breakthrough discoveries that improve human health.

Together, we translate science into health.

The duties and responsibilities contained in the job description are intended to be examples of the accountabilities for which the person in the position will demonstrate competency through performance. The job description is not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Duties and responsibilities are subject to change and other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher or computational biologist to join the Vasciaveo Laboratory at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute (SBP) in San Diego. The selected candidate will develop computational tools for single-cell and multi-omics analysis to dissect cellular heterogeneity, gene regulatory networks, and epigenetic mechanisms in complex biological systems, including patient-derived tumors. This position offers close collaboration with experimental biologists and clinicians, ownership of high-impact projects, and strong mentorship toward an independent career. Our goal is to translate data-driven models into actionable biological hypotheses and therapeutic strategies. Representative work includes Li, Vasciaveo, et al. Nature 2026; Malagola, Vasciaveo et al., Cell 2024; Stokes, Vasciaveo et al., Cell Chemical Biology 2024; Leuzzi, Vasciaveo et al., Cell 2024; Vasciaveo et al., Cancer Discovery 2023;

Under limited direction, the Postdoctoral Associate will perform duties as outlined by their supervisor. Being a training position, the Postdoctoral Associate will support the lab and experiments, while pursuing their own research.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead, design and perform integrative analyses across diverse datasets to derive novel biological insights.
  • Develop computational methods and pipelines for single-cell RNA-seq and multiome data.
  • Collaborate with experimental biologists and clinicians to design and interpret studies.
  • Contribute to mentoring junior researchers and shaping the lab’s computational strategy.
  • Publish research findings in high-impact journals and disseminate results.
  • Perform other related tasks, duties and responsibilities as required, assigned or directed.

Minimum Qualifications – Candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Ph.D. in quantitative disciplines (e.g., computer science, physics, computational biology, systems biology).
  • Strong proficiency in prog. languages such as Python and R, and familiarity with relevant bioinformatics tools.
  • Solid understanding of statistical and computational methods in biology.
  • Proven track record of research productivity, including peer-reviewed publications.
  • At least one first author paper published at peer-reviewed journal or accepted for publication
