What are 'Expanded Learning' programs?

Expanded Learning programs refer to educational opportunities that take place outside of the traditional school day, such as afterschool, summer, or weekend programs. These initiatives aim to support student growth by providing academic enrichment, hands-on learning experiences, and social-emotional development. Expanded Learning programs often partner with schools and community organizations to offer activities ranging from STEM projects to sports and the arts. Their goal is to complement classroom learning and help students succeed both academically and personally.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Expanded Learning professional, and why are they important?

To thrive in Expanded Learning, you need a background in education, youth development, or a related field, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with curriculum planning tools, student assessment systems, and educational technology is typically required. Strong communication, leadership, and relationship-building skills help foster positive learning environments and engage diverse student populations. These skills ensure effective program delivery, student growth, and alignment with educational goals in after-school or enrichment settings.

Expanded Learning professionals typically design, implement, and oversee enrichment programs that support students' academic, social, and emotional growth outside traditional school hours. Daily tasks may include planning engaging activities, supervising students, collaborating with teachers and community partners, and monitoring program effectiveness.
