Exhibition Intern information

What is an exhibition intern?

Exhibition Interns are entry-level professionals or students who assist in the planning, organization, and execution of exhibitions at museums, galleries, or other cultural institutions. Their responsibilities often include conducting research, preparing exhibition materials, helping with installation and deinstallation, and supporting visitor engagement. This role provides practical experience in curatorial practices and exhibition management, making it ideal for those interested in museum studies, art history, or event coordination. Exhibition Interns work closely with curators and other museum staff to gain insight into how exhibitions are developed and presented to the public.

What types of projects and responsibilities can an exhibition intern expect to handle during their internship?

As an Exhibition Intern, you can expect to work closely with curators and exhibition coordinators on tasks such as researching artists or objects, assisting with installation and de-installation of artworks, updating exhibition checklists, and preparing interpretive materials for visitors. You'll often collaborate with various departments including education, marketing, and collections to ensure exhibition success. This hands-on experience provides valuable insight into the planning, logistics, and teamwork involved in mounting exhibitions, making it a strong foundation for future roles in museums or galleries.

To thrive as an Exhibition Intern, you typically need a background in art history, museum studies, or a related field, along with strong organizational skills. Familiarity with collection management systems, basic graphic design software, or digital archiving tools is often required. Attention to detail, strong communication, and teamwork are valuable soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure that exhibitions are executed smoothly, artifacts are handled correctly, and visitors have a positive, educational experience.
